Looking for product tips, and or care tricks, for the "Black" cloth, convertible top on my 93 C-4. I've seen the care kits from Motorworks, and the other standard corvette catalogs. Is there anything better on the market?
My black ragtop gets gently cleaned with a soft bristle brush that's been dipped in the same bucket of car wash liquid and water that I'll then use to clean the rest of the car.
If the brush left any bristle debris on the canvas after it's dried (it usually does), I carefully vacuum it off.
That's all the care it gets, and all the care it's seemed to want. The canvas looks nearly new when it's freshly cleaned.
There is a special cleaning solution for convertible tops that is preferred because it renews the waterproofing. The name escapes me but I am sure another forum member will recall it; it may be called "Ragtop."
The best product I have used on my cloth convertible is called RaggTop. It works very well. Do a Google search on it and you will find many places that sell it online. I bought a kit which included a cleaner and preservative. Easy to use and great results.
I wash my black top as infrequently as possible.
I brush it with a new car body (wash) brush, then vacuum.
When it is time to wash, i use one of two products to wash it and subsequently restore its water repellency.
My preferred of the two is Raggtopp. Auto Geek a supporting vendor sells it. You need both the cleaner and the protectant. see the link to the left http://www.auto-geek.net/forum2/corvetteforum.htm
If you want to find something at your local autoparts store look for Aerospace 301 convertible top cleaner and the protector for cloth tops.
It works well also...
The biggest secret with a cloth top is to let it dry thoroughly ( at least 48 hours) before your put on the water repellent. If it is damp at all, you can get mould growth. This will look like greyish/white splotches on your black top.
