I Noticed The Gear Shift Lever Rises About An Inch While Driving And Took Off The Boot Cover To Inspect Why The Transmission Surges Upward When Accelerating .i Can Use The Gear Shift Lever To Move The Transmission 1/4 Inch Side To Side With Engine Turned Off.i Am Thinking That I Might Need To Inspect The Mounting Brackets But I Can Not Find A Diagram In My Chiltons Manual That Shows How It Is Supported.has Anyone Had A Similiar Experience Like This?is It Possible That The Rear Differential Brace Is Loose?
If your C4 is anything like my 4th gen Camaro was, there is a rear tranny mount and bracket near the back of your tranny. The rubber in the mount usually lets go and then your tranny will rise up and hit your tunnel under hard acceleration. The replacement mount is $10 for a rubber lifetime warranty one from Autozone or you can go for a polyurethane one to tighten things up. However, expect more vibration from the poly mount. Whole job takes 15-30 minutes at most with a 15mm wrench.
Yeah I had a similar discussion related to this a while back. Something about the tranny jerking when shifting into or out of drive. My vette does this and someone suggested replacing the mounting brackets.
My transmission rocks like that when the C beam bolts at the transmission come loose. The C beam runs from the back of the transmission to the front of the differential. There are 2 bolts on each side, the front ones are 18mm. You'll need to snake a wrench up top to hold the nut while you tighten the bolt.
Check the engine mounts as well. In the past I've had them break and I've lost radiator shrouds, brake booster fittings and in once instance I crushed an air tube coming from the exhaust back to the air filter(these weren't vettes).
The C4 doesn't have a conventional trans mount like other cars.
Are you sure it's not the shifter that's moving the 1/4 inch?
WHen you say the whole trans is moving, that's definitely not the shifter, but as mentioned, it's gotta be the mounting points.
Also pop your hood, put the parking brake on, start the car, put it in 1st and slowly let the clutch out, see what the engine does, if you see the engine rising(should only be the left side rising) chances are the motor mount on that side.
There is no side that in the motion of moving indicates as if it is limited to as in the case of an engine mount.Very much affirming the theory of the rear suport beam is loose and is allowing the junction on the rear of the transmission to flex when under torque .I have yet to inspect the components but from the diagram there is definetley a significant probability that the lack of a rear transmission crossmember is causeing this. Thanks for all your help dudes,Ronjon
