I had to replace my ignition switch,so I took the telescoping wheel apart. replaced the switch, assembled everyhthing, but now I'm stuck trying to "push the spring down enough to install the snap ring,How is this done,by brute force,or is there some secret to it? I can't vision the guy on the assembly line, pushing with his thumbs,30 cars a day. Besides when you use two hands to push the retainer down, how do you install the snap ring? Open to all suggestions......Grandpa BOB

i know on my 75, it takes a special tool that threads onto the shaft that
compresses the plate that compresses the spring so as to get the u shaped retainer on

It is very hard to describe. I am assuming you have a lock plate compression tool? Attach the tool and visualize the results of what mechanical force is needed to compress the lock plate so you can get the snap ring on. It took me quite a while but when I figured it out it went quickly. Or you can do as I have done with other tasks and go to the local mechanic with a dozen donuts and plead stupidity. They will gladly show/tell you how to do it.
I was trying to install some shocks on an 80s GM product and ran into problems. I went back to NAPA and asked for help. The lady at the counter explained the trick and I went back and got er done. My wife got a good laugh out of the fact that I had to get a woman's advice!
