I've just completed a valve stem seals job on an 87 vette. I put everything back together and the car doesn't smoke anymore, but I'm hearing chattering of the valves more than I would like to hear. The car runs fine but I can't stand the chattering of the valves. My question is do I have to go back in and re-adjust the valves to get them to quiet down or is there something else I have to replace. I tried to adjust them the first time by putting the engine at TDC and adjusting each valve. Any help would be appreciated. The car has 102,000 on the odometer. Thanks in advance.
theres many methods if setting valves but my favorite (so you dont have to dig out specs etc) is hook up a starter button and bump the engine until you see the opposite valve spring compressing and then adjust the one that isnt moving on that particular cylinder.
if the intake valve is compressing then you know that the exhaust valve is closed.and vise versa.
zero lash the one your setting and then crank it down the 1/4,1/2,3/4,or 1 turn you are shooting for and then mark it so you know its done.
this method works on any engine that uses valves.honda 90 to a 600 cummins.

I did the same thing on my 87. When they tell you to tighten down the rocker until you feel no movement I found this method helpful. I had read that you should rotate the push rod back and forth between your fingers as you tightened the nut until you felt no movement. I had a tough time doing this as my fingers and the push rods were too slippery from the oil and assembly lube that I was using. I had a Mopar mechanic advise me to jiggle the push rod up and down until there was no slack as I was tightening the nut. This seemed to work much better. He then advised to tighten 1/2 to 1 full turn after the slack was eliminated. I went with 3/4 turn and they turned out great. I put a few thousand miles on her afterwards with no troubles.
Edit: Take a look at Agent86's post about rebuilding his high mileage 86. I wonder if your timing chain might be as loose as his. This might cause your problem also.
