Default 85 Alarm Problem

My 85 will ocasionally sound the alarm when I open the door. I have to raise the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable to reset it. Can someone tell me what the problem is?

Inserting the key in either door lock and locking/unlocking that tumbler should cancel the alarm. Key in the ignition will NOT cancel the alarm. The alarm is Armed by locking either door from the outside with the key. You should verify the operation of the switches on the door locks - these can fail....

It's most likely the door locks not grounding out the theft disable line. Does it happen on the drivers or passenger side, or both?

As far as the key not disabling it.... The GM book says turning the key on will disarm the alarm, but it won't kill the horn once it's already been tripped.

Here's all the TDM stuff:

The control module is under the dash top behind the breadbox. The absolute best mod I did to my 85 was to yank that puppy out. A blue box about the size of a pack of smokes. Disconnect the wires, no more psycho alarm. Also a good time to do the breadbox delete.

I have the same problem with my 86 driver's side door. I have been fixing other problems on my list and haven't gotten to this one yet this winter. I'll post how it went.

Thenks everyone for the ideas. Can you just pull the module on the 85? I really don't want that alarm on this car anyway.

Best thing I ever did was get rid of that POS stock alarm and
went with an after market keyless entry-with a ton of options.
Got it at Best Buy-AVITAL model 2200. That was about 4 or 5
years ago-trouble free.Think it was around $250 installed and the guys were really professional.

It's much easier to just unplug the module.

But why don't you just pull the door panel off and clean the door lock switch?

That'll do it to. You'd lose the horn with it though.

I don't really want to pull the door panel, because I think the stock alarm system is cheesy on the 85's. I think I will just disconnect the module, and have a nice alarm installed with the keyless remote. Living in Colorado, the few cold days can freeze the outside locks.

Speaking of the locks, on the driver's side mine is really really stiff, and too much for my wife to deal with :o ... is there any way of fixing the stiffness?

The only thing cheesy about the GM system is the lack of keyless entry.

Your aftermarket one is otherwise going to function the same, and hook up to the same inputs. It will probably be easier to defeat than the GM alarm, which requires locating the module or removing the dash to get to the fuse.

And if Circuit City installs it, your aftermarket one is more likely to fail or set your car on fire.
