Never do this!!!!
Last year, I changed the oil! O.K., so the story is pretty boring so far...
Anyway, when I was done, I lowered the car and was fillin' 'er back up. Just as I was pouring in the last quart, my daughter asked me to come help her. After I said yes, helped her, and returned to the car, I closed the hood.
Guess what, I forgot to replace the oil filler cap! Dented hood. Or, should I say cracked hood!
Don't fret, it was already damaged. See my other threads.
Just thought I'd let you know there's no room to leave the filler cap on the intake. Could be an expensive mistake!
I once hooked up the battery charger backwards. Black to red and red to black. Checked it twice and turned it on. After hearing the charger make some noises, I shut it off, looked over the connections, turned it back on again and then finally realized what I had done. What a bone head!!!

my vette also has a crack on the hood from the oil cap. it happened by a dealer!!! however that was before i owned it and i havent done it since, plus im repainting it soon to match body panels and fix little problems like that.
here's one for ya... a buddy of mine had a Miata. Took it into the dealer for service... they didn't tighten a sparkplug - AT ALL. They started the engine, and it shot out, severely denting the hood. The dealer paid dearly for this mistake...

Just be glad you didn't drive the car. I did that years ago, refilled the oil but forgot to put the filler cap back on. Went for a drive and after about 15 smelled oil. What a f***ing mess! Had to have the engine steam cleaned.

Actually, I did drive it. The next day during lunch (about 15 minutes worth of driving), I noticed the hood looked funny in the middle.
Stopped, raised hood and found the problem. Just laughed since the hood was already toast.
As with the poster above, I also did not have a mess. Difference is mess/no mess due to PCV valve? I also did not go over 40mph and have a six speed (which probably has lower rpm).
heres a bone head. i had the car on jacks with the hood up cleaning in the garage and decided to open the door to let some light in and the hood was in the way of the door. their goes cracks and about a 1/8 of corner missing. a lot of explaning to do to my dad why the hood is crack and broken.

Here's a good one:
Last year a couple of days before the C4/ZR1 Gathering, a friend that is going to follow me to the Gathering, calls to tell me his opti-spark has gone out. He takes a day off to fix it and is able to make the journey to BG. Anyway, when we meet to caravan, I told him that I will lead so if anything is wrong with his car, he doesn't spray anti-freeze all over my car. So we drive 330 miles to Kentucky from St. Louis without any problems.
The next morning he decides to leave the hotel early in the morning to go wash the car. All of a sudden, as he is pulling out of the hotel parking lot, his son notices alot of smoke. They pull over, pop the hood, and find one of the waterpump hoses had come of. To his suprise, he had left the clamps off. He said they were just dangling at the bottom of the hose. Talk about lucky!
Hey Gregg,
I got one for ya... about a year ago I had removed and reinstalled the serpentine belt (forgot now why).
Next day I'm up in St. Joe (60 miles way) for a car show... cleaning, dusting under the hood and what do I see... my flipping 5/8th box-end still on the belt tensioner nut... could not believe it didn't come off and get caught in the belt and rip off my opti or get launched through my hood or something .
Anyway got to laugh about it all the way home...
Not as bad as starting the car in the garage and upon hearing a strange engine noise I started to back the car out of the garage with the door open while listening and looking under the car. The door hit the side of the garage and took a chunk of fiber glass out of the door. I was able to patch and paint it so you could not see the damage at all. I really spaced out. I was lucky I did not take the whole door off. Please do not tell anyone about this as i would be totally embarassed.
