Hi ,sometime back before eveything went computerized, I remember GM parts departments had a book that had the GM part number and next to it all the models that used it,eg:14000000,P,O,C,B ect.
It would be nice to walk into a parts house and ask for a 1986 Chevy
Nova horn relay or something like that and not tell them it's for a vette.
I think they assume your rich or something.
Does something like this still exsist?
And if it does, where can I get my greasy mitts on it?
I heard junk yards have a book like this, is that true?
Thanks.
Oooh. This is a good thread. Not like all those other "which headers should I get?" or "What spark plugs should I use?" threads. I'd love to see what can be dug up here.
I love to walk up to the counter an ask for a part. " they ask year" I say 95 "they ask model" I say corvette then they all look up at me then to the parking lot. and you just stand there with that smile.( then it comes oh this is going too cost ya ) there went that smile.
This is interesting. I haven't had the fortune of getting a fisting when it comes to parts...yet.
As far as that book, why don't you go "acquire" one?
Seriously, I go to the autozone website, look up the part, then look it up for a comparable, albeit cheaper car. A starter solenoid for my Lincoln is $45, and a starter solenoid for a Ford econoline van(same engine) is $7. The car used to go through a solenoid every two months or so, its been a year with the $7 one and it works great.
I normally go to an auto parts store and ask them to "do a little reserch for me" then tell them what I want and what kind of part I need and to find me one that the specs match on but is priced for me not Joe Schmukatelli the Banker man. If they wont work with me I go somewhere else. I know some guys at an AutoWorks that help me out alot cept for the Mustang dude only because hes a hater.

What do you mean,"acquire one?"
Thats what I'm asking, does this type of thing still exist, where do I "acquire one?"
I know I can't go to a junkyard and ask for a windshield for a 1965 Pontiac Tempest and expect it to fit.But I do know the General, and anytime he could buy from the same vendor and use it on different models, that's a buck in his pocket!
Can anyone say for sure that something like say a window motor, not the regulator, mind you, isn't the same one used on a GMC truck?
I was at Pick & Pull last week and cut some harness connectors off some GM car,I'm not even sure what year or model it was,but they were an exact match. That's just one example, there has to be more.
Maybe I touched a nerve here for some of you out there that make a living on selling parts,if I did I'm sorry.
But I'm not trying to take away someones livelyhood,
I'm just trying to save a buck, just like the General.
