So far this 92 has had a new transmission ($2,000) and it almost caught on fire with the alarm wired wrong ($703). Regular stuff like hoses and belts and turning rotars and brake pads too. That's in 15,000 miles!
There are lights burned out under the hood because the factory wiring hits the alternator, I can't get the bulb cover off the passanger courtesy light so I gave up.
But the wiring and tranny are not usual items. This car is not durable!
I am even tired of thinking about it. When I think of something I want it's out of here.
I've had it for a few months now. Spent $2400 getting caught up on prior owner maintenance (or lack thereof) sins.... Rad, exhaust, starter, alternator, wheel bearings, fluid flush (all fluid in the car!)... Hopefully all I need to do is fix the little stuff (tuneup, dash bulbs, cyclops bulb, cruise control etc...). My '70 took $6k to get roadworthy when I first got it, so by comparison the '87 is cheap! :seeya
Bought my 87 with 72K miles on it and do not know what repairs were made before my time. I can say that everything was maintained down to still having the ALDL cover intact(no Bubba work), After reading this Forum I changed all hoses, fluids, filters, plugs, tires, battery ,and wires in an attempt to not be stranded somewhere. In 10K miles of fun driving I have had one code 32 (egr temp sensor $10) and one defective new battery. I did have to disconnect my underhood lights because they would discharge the battery. Knock on wood
All of the major failures on my 92 were due to mods. The tranny was "beefed up" by the previous owner. This is why I spent $400 on a tune up only to find out that the skip was due to it hitting the rev limiter. On top of that the tranny failed so that cost another $2000!!!
Bought her with 16K & have 26.5K on her now in about 1.5 years. The only thing that has happened that stopped her was the battery (one week after I got her). The clutch started slipping but that was my fault & probably would have fixed itself (glazing on the flywheel) if I would have taken it easy for a while, instead I torn it apart & put a new one in to be safe. The old one still looks great & is in my storage shead ! Every thing else has been mod stuff !!!!! My wife thinks it is broken ALL the time. I "had" to pull the rear end due to "a pinion seal leak". Opps 4.10's accidently fell into the rear end while it was out.:D "No dear they just cleaned the parts real good, that's why those gears look new! See how well the Mobil 1 works." just remembered, I did put a condensor (the radiator thingy) on the A/C because a rock beat a hole in it.
Here's the breakdown with repair costs over the years:
White 84 since 1999 (drove 25K miles on it, now 140K on odometer)-$350
Yellow 92 since 1999 (drove 45K miles on it, now 85K)-$750 (opti and H20)
Yellow 90-129K miles, drove it 1.5 miles (yep!) in 3 months, no repair receipts
Silver 84-No repairs made, owned for a few months
White 92-opti and H20 pump, drove less than 1,000 miles in 3 months
90 ZR-1, drove 3,500 miles in 1.5 months, replaced power brake booster
I haven't had it really break. I have done regular maintenance and replacement, such as tires, battery,
alternator, valve guide seals, valve cover gaskets, mufflers, bose speakers, and anntennae.
otherwise nothing big. ;)
she does have 75,000 (I have put on 25,000) and I knew going in what to look for and expect. things like the valve guide seals just started to go and so since the money was here I spent it.
Luckliy the car was perfectly maintained at the dealership near my house by the first owner. :yesnod:
Re: how often does your vette break??? (Bones LT1)
All the usual maintance items like plug wires, but no opti or water pump in 55K+ miles (115K on odo). The things that I have had to have fixed include a window motor, headlight switch, gear indicator in console. We use the Vette as a daily driver and that way it is exercised all the time.
2 thing that I have tried to fix and no luck are a leak at the front of the door and the rear defogger
Oh yeah, I replaced a taillight bulb and had to break the bulb to get it loose from the sealing goop that keep it high and dry.
Re: how often does your vette break??? (Bones LT1)
Got my ´94 convertible 2 1/2 years ago, with 28,000 miles on it, now it´s got 53,000 miles on it.
Repairs since then:
- Water pump
- Opti Crap
Broken, but not repaired:
- Bose CD
- occacionally one or the other of the electronic switches doesn´t work
Broken, needs to be repaired this week:
- Cooler of power steering fluid
- Serpentine belt
Most annoying item:
- brakes, need to be replaced including rotors every 10,000 miles, not suitable for a sports car!!!! Still I am horrified of the costs of a Porsche-brake conversion!

Re: how often does your vette break??? (Lv2Driv)
I had an '84, bought used with 42,500 miles. I kept the car for three years. In a nutshell, everything broke on it , at least one time. A few years later I bought an '89 with 28,500 miles on the odo. I kept the car for eight years and drove it 37,000 pampered miles. Better reliabilty than the '84 but still problems. I guess I would rather switch than fight. I just ordered an '02 Coupe. SAVE the WAVE!!!!!
When I bought mine in January 2000, it had 20,500 one owner kms. Since then I've added 22,000 kms with nothing more than gas and oil changes. I have a set of replacement tires that I bought on sale, but there's still some tread left on the GSC's (rear worn, front ok).
Apart from an annoying nuisance brake fault light that the dealer can't seem to fix, it still runs like a charm.
