I heard about the design flaws in the Vortex, but when I ask people, they tell me they notice a SOTP difference with it.
The SLP guys say they dont notice a SOTP difference, from what I read on the group purchase on the intake. The GP really seems tempting, but I don't want to use up to much money if there isn't going to be a big difference, I'm short on cash.
Which one do you guys recommend, if none of these, has anyone felt a difference with another product? Thanks, Suke.
If i am not dreaming I think I heard Mackey say that you don't get that much difference with any intake unless you have really modded you engine. ex heads, intake, exhaust. I hope I am not remembering this wrong but I remember that he said you can get about the same performance upgrade with a stock engine by using the open air box or even cutting the top of your air cleaner top...From what I heard, save your money for exhaust first...that should help you more than anything for the money. :seeya
I started the group purchase and I would love for you to hop in, due to the possible cost savings, but I don't want you to buy something that you are not going to get back in return.
I believe it's true that you won't feel much of a gain if you switch to a vortex or a SLP, unless your original filter is really clogged, as opposed to gears or a good exhaust system.
The basic mod's that most people do first are the exhaust, intake system, shifter, and chip/reprogram because of the relative cost and ease of installation.
I did the gears and exhaust first, just put in the hurst. The gears for the definite SOTP feel, and the exhuast because it sounds so dam sweet. I held off the SLP because I figured that the gains would be marginal compared to the rest.
However, I do believe that as you start to modify your engine beyond the basic mod's, your car will need the added benefit of a intake/throttle body, MAF Sensor upgrade.
I could be wrong, but this is the way I am thinking.
1. Decide what you want to accomplish first.
2. Figure out your budget,
3. Then plan it out where you can knock things out at the same time.
4. I went what was the biggest bang for the dollar.
I have done the other basic mod's so I figured that this would be the next logical step before I get into the engine itself, such as, cam/porting/and so on...
I haven't done the reprogram, but I plan on doing that when I decided to make the jump for long tube headers and do it at once.
I hope this helps in your decision, but I have to add this....
at $190.00, that's almost 50.00 off SLP's price.... pretty tempting....
I installed the SLP induction this past March and realized a ZERO gain (no loss, but no gain either)....I have plenty of 1/4 mile runs as a comparison...... spend the money elsewhere, JMHO.
SLP's ad says up to 20hp gain! I think this intake system is a great looking add-on and I'm still thinking about buying it, but it really irks me when suppliers make these statements without any specific tests to back-up their claims. I have an LT4, what gains will I see???? I bet no stock LT1 or LT4 ever saw a 20hp gain from this add-on!!!
I have the American Performance ram air. It is the stock unit backwards. The car sounds nicer. And I can hear a cool "psh" noise when revving it too. But for performance, not much I can feel. My SOTP sensor isn't too sensitive for minor mods.
My car does run nicer with it and I did gain fuel economy. I would do an airbox. But not the ones you listed. One is cr*p and the other gets its air where the stock one does. My system looks stock and is built well. I'll put up pics on my website soon.
I might be way off here, but it seems to me that a cut lid, and K&N filter would get about the same intake as the SLP setup. On the other hand, that claw is a pretty darn nice lookin intake!!

Re: Vortex vs. SLP intake (CowboyNVette)
I'm still using a stock panel K&N ait filter in my car. It is the housing that draws air from the bottom, (I'm using it cause I got it for free) and I think i'm running OK.

Re: Vortex vs. SLP intake (89_FX3_6-spd)
Do you mean this?
Who makes this? I have pic and no info on it.

#2, I think MID AMERICA sells it. Like I said the only reason I got it was that it was given to me, or I'd still be using the stock one.
Heck, I'm only running mid 11s. Why do I need anything more? #1 :blueangel: :blueangel:

If memory serves me, (it may not this time ) I think that unit is made by JET performance. You can buy them from Mid America or Corvette Central. Price is about $280. You can also buy a different lid to go with it (supposedly it acts like an air scoop) for an extra $80.
In theory I don't see how the SLP intake can flow that much better than the standard airbox when it is drawing (warm) air from the same spot under the bonnet as the factory airbox. Also, how is the airflow meant to be improved? I don't see the different air filter elements of the SLP unit making that much (if any) difference. Just my two cents.
Not trying to steal anyone's thunder, but I ran across a website who lists the SLP intake for $150 for 91-96. Try this link http://www.fasttoys.net/8498ybodyframes.html
It says they are on vacation until the 26th. But they are advertising for $40 lower than the GP.
