Default Hypertech module

Hey Guys, I recently bought a Hypertech Power Tuning Module for my 94. This is the kind that piggyback off the ECM. Has anyone else got/had one of these that can give me an honest opinion of their worth. Installation seems easy enough, but according to Hypertech, I have to remove/unplug the module if I ever need to have the car serviced by someone other than myself. I picked it up for a song, so its not like I'm out a bunch of money, if its a big PITA.

Thanks guys, Zane

I have one, and used it when the car was bone stock.

Love them or hate it...I could consistently get a tenth off my time when I loaded the program vs. not. One day I did three time trials stock, loaded the program and did three more and it was faster.

Is it worth the dough...probably not.

If you have any mods on your car, sell it. The reality of a car, it has to be tuned for the equipment on it, and the Hypertech was made for a stock engine.

My car now has headers, no cats, bla bla bla so mine will be for sale soon

I thought the program auto loaded once you installed the module and stayed loaded unless you removed the module? Is this correct or am I missing something?

Thanks Zane

Gotta recommend PCMForLess based on previous forum comments alone. Don't have one myself YET, but will 'soon'.

My '93 had a Hypertech in it when I bought it, which I removed when it started failing (when hot). I DO notice the rear doesn't kick out on 1 - 2 power shifts like it did before, but have read (can't vouch for this) that the only real change in the Hypertech is mixture at WOT. Kind of makes sense, based on my SOTP feel since removing it.

Alvin at PCMForLess is a CF supporting tuner and I have read LOTS of really positive feedback on his product - enough so that I am going to take the plunge.

The chips in question are piggybacked to the stock chip. They don't "reprogram" anything, but contain a different list of values tables that tell the electronics what to do when or under specific conditions. Removing either chip puts you right back to stock right away (I THINK).

Good luck,

What is the difference between a Hypertech Thermomaster chip and a power tuning module?

Good catch, Angel. I might have gotten twisted up in my knickers there. You know what they say about assumptions . . . .

Good luck,
93 vs 94 is differant as a 93 uses a prom and a 94 is a download
I installed one of Alvin's custom prom's in my 92 last week and it makes it run alot cooler as well as removal of the speed limiter and a timing advance. If your considering a prom i would definetly go with a product from pcmforless as opposed to a generic from another company IMO

Go with Alvin's chips. He is a supporting member and when you have a question, he acutally anwers the phone. I have one in my 63 6sp convert. and it runs better through out the RPM range.
