Last week I was giving a 1996 vet, that's right FREE no charge from a family member it is black with black/tan interior 4spd AOD. Well on my ride home I noticed it would not shift into overdrive 1st an 2nd gear are fine 3rd gear is slow to come, if you lift of the gas is would come in but no odrive. This is my first automatic and fuel injected car. yes I'm old school I need a reputable trans dealer. I would like to spend no more than $1400.00 on a tranny. I would like a better performing trans because I do plan on future modifications 400hp-475hp so I will need it to perform better than stock. I found this site www.eatmyshift.com what do you think guy's/gal's THANK'S
You may want to take the car to pep boys or autozone and ask them to scan it for codes first. 1996 has a fully electronically controlled trans. It could be a bad wiring harness or something simple if you're lucky.
Unfortunately I can't help with an auto trans shop recommendation (no clue). If you're looking for something local, try posting the question in the appropriate regional forums here.
Well...let me be the 2nd to welcome you to the forum.

First thing I would try is buying a bottle of TransX and put it in the transmission. Its only like $6 at autozone. Make sure you dont overfill it. This has worked for me quite a few times. Yes I know people say these fluids dont work, but it only works for minor problems. It wont fixed worn out gears or anything else thats broken. It works by revitalizing the seals inside your transmission. If that doesnt work, then that means the problem is more serious and you'll need to take it to a transmission shop. I'm just saying it could save you some money if it turns out to be a minor thing.
In 2001 I had shifting problems.... and a womp womp sound when I would floor it. The torque converter had been replaced by the previous owner, (or so the place he bought the vette from told him) it was still bad when I bought it.
So $1,900. for a factory rebuilt trans from Chevy and a three year warranty.
Thanks guys every scenes I got this car I have looked at a lot of vet sites and this is by far the most negligible an informative one I've seen I'm a member for life I tried Lucas trans fix it did not help I think I will just get a new tranny because the boss "wife" has already giving me permission to do so. with the trans already out I'm going to install a 2500 converter, with 354 gears to come in the near future in about a mouth or so how will the conv effect the drive of the car until the rear it installed, should I just wait and do it all at the same time. I'm also putting a new trans cooler on at this time, just in case.
This is my very first automatic car so I will need alot of help from yous guys. Thank's
ps. my other vehicles are
69 Camaro 4 speed
72 Monte Carlo 4 speed
49 Chevy pick up column shift 3 speed
Daily driver 71 vw 4 speed
I think I would find out whats wrong with the trans before doing anything,it could be a simple fix,no sence in rebuilding trans if its not the problem
Yes; I agree with Mr.Nice. One step at a time. Deal with the initial problem, the transmission. Take the car to a "reputable" transmission specialist in your area, and ask him to diagnos the problem. If the transmission tech recommends a big dollar fix, tell him you will give it some thought, and then take it to another transmission specialist, and compare diagnosis, and price's to fix it.
I wouldn't consider any up-grades until your car has been mechanically assessed, and it doesn't fall into the category of diminishing returns.
Lastly, congrats on your good fortune, and welcome to the forum.
OK one step at a time great advice I went to autozone for a trouble code it turned out to be p1870 I'm not going to go into specifics about this code. I'm sure you've been there done that anyway I have read several post about this code an the transgo looks like the way to go so I will try that first I still have my BUDGET can you keep a secret. Thank's
transgo is pretty much a shift kit. to rebuild the valve body it allows for a harder shift. and down shift at any speed . This kit corrects/prevents/reduces erratic pump slide bounce that wears out pump valves.
code p1870 in gm products is no loc-up or forth gear hard shifts from 1st to 2nd ****s maybe due to wear in the control valve body that contains the tcc isolator and regulator valve that is my problem hard shifts an no 4th/od cant hurt to try ebay 89.99 have to pull pan to inspect anyway. can't hurt to try this morning i was about to buy a new tranny. Thanks
