A friend of mine is looking to do a stock re-build on a small block and wants to do it himself. What's a good book that goes through each and every step in the engine building process- in order. He is mechanically inclined- but has never put an engine together. Any help would be appriciated.

Is he interested in the LT (Gen II) or L series (Gen I) small blocks?
SA Autobooks has several books he might be interested in.
I think Eckler's has one on the LT.

Check out these folks. Their rebuild book,SA26, is excellent. Haven't looked at the print/DVD version. As an aside, the remainder of their pubs are equally good.

Believe it or not, JC Whitney still sells a video on rebuilding the small block chevy. I loaned my copy out but never got it back. I set our little TV/VCR up on my work bench and rebuilt an 81 Corvette engine into a real torque monster. I did all the work by watching what the mechanic did and then just duplicating the job. I was able to do all the work except the machining, freeze plugs, cam bearings and fitting the piston pins.
It probably cost me more than if I had just gone out and bought a crate motor with all the Edelbrock parts, but I had a ball! What a thrill to fire it up, hear it run and realize that I did it myself!
