I have a 1996, with the Read Window tinted. I assumed it was like that from the factory? Maybe not, and previous owner had it done.
There are a couple of seams that are starting to "curl" a little.
So, did they come from factory with any tint? I ask this because it's not really a very dark tint at all.
How big a job is it to completly remove the tint that's there and have it done again?
factory tint is not a film, unless put on by the dealer. taking this stuff off requires a heat gun, razor blade, solvent and a nylon scrub pad (solv and scrubby over the rear defrost wires). they really hate taking the stuff off and can charge you 50-100% of what the tint job costs. btw, edge curling is not as bad as bubbling when it come to removal.....
Don't go any darker than 20%, or u won't b able to see well at night.
I just had my '95 retinted a few weeks ago with 3M 20%. It looks great and will continue to protect the interior from the strong UV's here in Oklahoma......

thats good to know!
...and not knowing much about tint...or 3M...
Does anyone know about the different types of tint...?
...and the best for our C4's?
My 87 was done professionally by the guy I bought it from. I think it looks good...and more importantly...takes down the summer temps as it really cuts out the sun.
From everything that I've heard or seen over the years it absolutely pays to have it done professionally. I would check your local yellow pages for shops that advertize the service and talk to them or another thought would be to visit some high end dealerships and ask where they have their customer's cars done.
One thing that you want to do is get a written guarantee on the workmanship. You can see that my sides are not as deeply tinted as the back. I drive my car every day and if the sides are too dark it's really difficult to see out the side windows at night. That's an important consideration at intersections.
If you are intending to tint just your back window, Corvette central has a window tint that you apply by wetting your window and putting the film on . You can easily remove it if you dont like it . I believe it costs 50.00 and is reusable. Tinted glass is the only way to go.
I am getting mine done on Thursday - 5% tint - its what my wife and I have on everything we own. Its not legal at all but have never been stopped for it on anything.

I can barely see out of the back window at night with 20% I can't even imagine what 5% must be like.
The sides aren't too bad with 20% since it's right in my face. I would be scared I would pull out in front of someone if I had 5%. Then again I am getting old

Don't Tint

Don't tint the rear window, no matter how dark or light, it will make seeing while backing up or at night time difficult at best.
Further, the tint has a finite life, and when it dies, removal could leave glue or worse, damage the defroster wire strips during removal.
Also, given your location, and the possible frequency of your usage of the rear defroster, it might reduce the defroster's effectiveness or damage the tinting during its frequent usage.
