Default Power antenna problem.

I've been having problems with my power antenna. Sometimes it will go all the way down like normal. But usually it will stop halfway down, or stop when it is still sticking up about 4 inches. When it does this it makes a clunking noise like gear teeth are grinding on each other. Any remedies for this problem?

Go to your Chevy dealer and buy a replacement antenna mast. Costs around $40. You will need a someone to help you turn the radio on and off as you guide the old mast out of the hole and thread the new mast into it.

If that doesn't work, you will more than likely have to remove the antenna motor, open it up, take out the broken sections of the old mast that are clogging the gears, seal it back up, re-install the motor, then thread the new mast down the hole.

Check the C4 TechTip sections on this Forum for instructions. Good luck!

Since I feel my time is worth something, and I hate having to do a project over, I bot a new, oem antenna. It was $86 + shipping on ebay. Took around 2 hours to remove/install (and 45 mins. of that was the time it took to align the antenna so it was straight - bending the bracket).

Does the antenna cable itself detach fromt the motor unit or does it feed all the way around to the amp through the back hatch area? It seems like it's sealed to the motor and that's what kept me from installing a new one so far.

Try cleaning the mast with WD40. If the mast sticks because dirt sometimes and the limit switch will shut it off.

But it's not shutting off, the motor is still going, it's just not retracting the antenna. I will try WD-40 though just in case, it can't hurt.
Thanks all for the responses.

The antenna cable detaches from the motor assembly. You can pull the whole unit out and service it. That's what I did on my '92.

Default cable feed

the antenna cable goes thru a big grommet in the dr. side wheelwell, just in front of the antenna. Pull up the rear corner of carpet on the back wall (speaker wall), the insulation then the carpet near the corner on the wheel well. You will find a junction with two connectors, only one of which goes to the antenna, and the antenna junction. Pull both of those and push the grommet out from the inside. By the way, I found that taking the two screws out of the bottom that hold the antenna, then pulling the antenna down thru the fender top grommet, then unscrewing the lead from the top ground wire (contrary to gm disassemble directions) was easier and meant I lost less skin. As I mentioned, it was a pretty easy job, and I didn't even jack up the rear end (also recommended by gm). The biggest problem was trying to bend the bracket so that the antenna was straight!

It still would have been cheaper to have purchased the mast. New unit or not, you are going to have to replace the mast sooner or later. It's designed to be replaced and you can thread a new mast down the hole in less than two minutes. Is your time that valuable?

Just a thought for the inevitable next-go-round....

I tried the search here but didn't have any luck so went shopping. This is what you need. It's easy to replace.

Yeah, because it invaribly seems that it takes me two hours to find out it was a two minute job - and by that time the whole back end of the car is apart!

But that was before I found this forum.

I've been there, bro. It took me four hours to replace my mast. I opted to work around the rear wheel instead of removing the taillights.
