Default Engine replacement cost

Hello everyone,

I have a 94 LT1 with 150K miles on it, and I just had some major main bearings/crank problems come up and the crank and bearings will have to be replaced. The dealer is going to give me a price on a crate engine, and since mine has so many miles I am seriously considering putting in the new engine. It would probably be $$$ wise, since at some point in the near future I would have to do something anyway.

Any ideas out there as to the cost? I'm keeping it bone stock as it is my daily driver.

Go to www.sdpc2000.com for prices on Scroggins Dickey Chevrolet performance parts. They list a 330 HP GM crate engine at $2,389. I'm not sure if that one is a replacement for an LT1 though.

I searched around on that site a bit, and the LT1 exact replacement engine for my car is $5300. The dealer quoted me $4600 for the same engine.
There isn't anyone around here I trust doing that kind of work on my car except the dealer, and they will give a 3 yr 100K mile warranty.

It's a lot of money, but so is another good used vette.

holy crap! I would put a crate engine in there, unless you want to keep it stock with the LT1. But you can get a crate engine with more power for less than the replacement LT1. Is the $4600 with installation and tax included?

In my area $2500 is usually enough to cover the actual rebuild. Another $1000 for labor to remove and install. The extras can add to the bill.

I'd go for the create engine, once your block is at the machine shop there is no telling what they might find wrong with the block?

I fit was mine I'd sell it and buy another one.
Major repairs add nothing to the value on re-sale.

with the low resale on these cars as it is. i dont think you should have a car as an investment. he should kep the car if he wants. i would recomend a high power crate engine, however keep the old engine and restore it later incase you want to return to stock in the future.

That is a GM crate engine for $4600, no, no installation or tax. But my problem is that no one in my area does that kind of engine work anymore that I can tell, and I'm sure not letting any mom & pop garage do the work. So I'm looking at about $6500 for everything.

Yes, I could get another vette but I have replaced so much of the car myself already and I don't want to start over with someone else's problems.

My thoughts exactly. The engine from the dealer has a 3 year/100K mile unlimited warranty.

Right on. I have no plans to sell the car and I didn't buy the car as an investment. I bought it for the fun factor and because I just love Corvettes.
If I get another vette on day it will be a C6. But my C4 is just a fun car and it still turns heads.

So I'll have a new engine, at I'm sure more than what I should be paying but I'll have a paid for C4 sitting in the garage.
