Smog isn't required for cars under 4 yrs old. You still get to pay a smog abatement fee though.

Paying the state for not having to smog it...? Yup.

Man....how spoiled I am? I've never had a smog test done; never been required to. That does it! I'm staying here! So what if I pay $6,000.00 a year in property taxes!

Hmmmm,....As much as i love to make fun of my home state,....I have to say that when i lived in San Bernardino in the early 70's, i lived across the street(4 lanes) from a grade school, now at recess you could hear the bell ring and you could hear the kids playing, but you could not see them because of the smog.
I decided that i would live longer if i lived somewhere else, so i moved up to the mountains above berdo (running springs-big bear lake) in the afternoon i would get a six pack and walk to the edge of running springs and set on the rocks looking down into the berdo valley below,....you could not see Anything,.... it was like looking at dirty brown tundra as far as the eye could see.
Now for those of you drag racers having a hard time picturing this, look at it this way,.......it's the early 70's and your strapped into a 200+mph funny car, you've got your hands full for sure,.....the problem is that you can see the staging lights,......but you can't SEE THE TRACK!!.......That was southern Cal in the 70's. joe

Wow, thanks for all the replies! I was most concerned about the 49- vs. 50-state legal issue, but it sounds like that's really a non-issue as there's no actual equipment difference. The only mod I have installed is a Corsa cat-back .... will I need to dig up an EO number for this? Or is this also a non-issue as its post-cat?

Thanks again!

Anything (exhaust systems, mufflers etc..) installed after the catalytic converter is legal in California, no EO (executive order) number needed.

Also, even though you have multiple parts with an EO number, If the vehicle fails the emmisions test you still might have to remove and re-install the stock parts to pass because each part given an EO number is designed to work alone on a stock engine Not with other aftermarket parts.

THe Corsa will be fine in Cali.

Passed a state test only smog the other daywith a K&N, catback and the TB bypassed. And a blown head gasket.

Man, Ive seen that many times. Even worse when you see that thick brown line and all of a sudden a sharp point comes poking thru it.
Jet liner breaking the line of smog.

I spent 25 years in LA. Never again.

Within the populated areas, there is biannual Smog1 and Smog2, which are just different degrees of testing, based on zip code. There's also test-only which requires certain cars, probably yours too, to go to certain types of stations.

CA sniffer test is probably stricter than your state, someone on here would be happy to look up the HC, CO, NOx limits for your year so you can compare with your last smog test.

If you have visible mods between the air filter and cat, then you'll need an EO number for those. If you've got too many mods, than you'll have to bribe a smog tech. Good luck on locating one willing. The state has smog narcs that try to bribe techs which can cost them their license and fines.

It's sad how little sense it all makes.

Another tip, is if you know someone that lives in non-smog part of CA, or out of state (more risky), you can register your vehicle there, as long as its not a P.O. box. But cops are getting stricter about where your car is registered. I've been hassled twice about it when getting my first ticket after moving to a new area.

Populated? I live in a town of 2,700 and have to smog every two years.
The only non-smog area that I know of is Clear Lake Ca.

We have a unique air problem here... too many people and not enough natural ventilation.

What happens here is that the Pacific Ocean sets up a north/south air dam along the coast.

The mountains on the east set up their own dam.

The smog gets trapped in the middle.

Whenever the Santa Ana's blow in, they push the air away from the mountians and into the dam along the coast... this means folks like us in Torrance get nailed with a nasty layer of ick.

My wife and her mom are native to LA. Her mom remembers growing up as a teen walking in south central (near the USC campus) and having her lungs hurt from the air she was breathing.

I know that emissions have become a political hot potato... and it's a shame... it has everything to do with reasonable practices, and CARB is not reasonable.

I, personally, don't see it politically. This is one of those issues that should transcend politics. It should be a no-brainer that our air quality be maintained as clean as humanly possible... Do we want a repeat of when the Allegeny River caught fire in Pittsburgh? Do we want our air as toxic as those places in Russia, India and China? I don't...

I know that air quality has improved by leaps and bounds in the last 30 years. Particulates are down, toxins are down and the air is generally cleaner. The problem, at least here in LA, is that there are just too many people... and that has caused CARB to get miedevil on our asses. I don't agree with the methods, but I do agree in principle that something needed to be done.

Personally, I would like a system that would allow us more leeway in the tuning of our cars... ones that would maintain the same levels out the tail pipe, but let us decide how we are going to accomplish this. Make it optional... most folks are too stupid to do this right.

All of the improvements have been wiped out by more and more people moving in. Its a stalemate.
One thing you should take into consideration is the air in SoCal is actually killing people. Living there is dangerous to your health.

I still think that the advances in testing and technology have made the air better than it was 30 years ago.

If the population had stayed the same the last 30 years, with the technical advances, we would be in great shape... but the number of people is just insane.

Andy, I lived in LA thirty years ago myself. The sky was BROWN! This was before "air quality" index. When the Santa Ana's blew off the crap, I would get lost navigating the freeways cause the roads all became unfamilar. But LA is losing the smog battle. Need to build more mass transit systems.

Yet the smog regulations ARE political. The socialist system is constantly upping the price and regulations on smogging private vehicles. Whenever the state needs more money to waste, they up the price and inspection intervals. CARB wants to include the county I live because our smog levels are increasing. Fact is the increase of polutants due to increased population in the bay are floating over and increasing our polution. So why elevate our smog requirements? Cause some #%&&*# liberal politico wants to make a name and gather votes here. So being true to the "feel good" law enforcement they're moving to elevate us to CARB2. Its all about money and politics.

I've only lived here for 18 years. I hear the air is better now.

I am sitting at my desk "working" in Long Beach and I can see the mountains 30 miles away. On a clear day you can see the mountains that are behind the mountains, that are behind the mountains. On a bad day there are no mountains.

The pollution laws have done their job. There is definately a political aspect to the laws, but, the new 505hp Z06 has no trouble passing emissions.

It's all about "living the american dream", as much as i make fun of Calif., i have to say that it was a way cool place to grow up, If you didn't like the landscape, just drive a hundred miles and it would be totally different, where else can you go from the ocean, to a desert, to 8,000ft mountains all in one day?
It was and still is one of the most diverse places on this panet,....but like everything else in life, time and people changed it, everbody wanted their slice of heaven, and slowlly but surely turned it into a place not to be, and as the coach has pointed out, it is now one of the most socialist places in this country. O frigging well, as we all know the only constent in life is change. joe

I always wondered about that...

I was tempted to register my cars in AZ since they only have one plate there, and I'd rather have AZ plates on my cars anyway...

I was told it was legal for me to do since I own a home there, classified a second home...

Since I'm leaving this hell-hole soon, I never pursued that option...
