Default Bahrain Calling!

HI,

I'm currently living in Bahrain and have just bought a Corvette for myself. It's the first time I've owned a 'proper' sports car - the rumbling of the engine sounds great! I'm from the UK, and I could never have afforded to run the thing with the petrol costs over there (try US$5 per gallon!).

The car is a 1998 model.

Several questions that I hope someone can help me out with. Most probably sound strange, but the car has come with limited history.

1. What size engine does the car have? I know it is 8 cylinder, but is it a 4 litre engine?

2. How often (miles/time) should an oil change be carried out?

3. What are the service intervals? Should I rely on the onboard computer to tell me that a service is due? I'm looking for a schedule on what bits and pieces need changing at different service intervals e.g. spark plugs.

4. Finally, anyone know of a good Corvette maintenance garage in Bahrain! There are a number of 'back street' garages here, but I'm not sure they have the right equipment to reset the onboard computer to say the servicing has been carried out (I'm assuming it needs resetting).

Thanks for your help.

Al.

It's a 5.7L engine. Change oil every 2000 miles. And only go to GM dealers for service. Other than that, enjoy your car.

welcome to the forum!!!

You have a 1998??? You might wanna go to the C5 section and get their opinions. Honestly.

I don't think you need to change the oil every 2000 miles tho. you MUST use synthetic. Mobil 1 is the original fill. I have read where the latest Mobil 1 can go 15000 miles between changes. But with all the sand issues, I would go 3000 or so. Also, get a K&N air filter. They use a cotton gauze with oil to filter the air. They work VERY well. Get the cleaner kit with it. The advantages are huge. You CLEAN the filter, never replace it! This way, if you go through a sand storm or something (God forbid), you can clean it and all is well.

Do you have an owners manual? If not, get one. That will answer the rest of your quesions.

There should be GM dealers in the middle east. GMs cars and trucks are VERY popular over there.

Welcome! I chat with several Bahrainians(<---- is that correct???) that have Corvettes. If you have never been to http://www.wheelsofbahrain.com then you should go there. Looks like a lot of people from Bahrain own American made sports cars, like Vettes and Camaros. Do you know "Corvette Princess"?

Thanks for the replies. I made a typo - the car is 1988. Will check out the suggested website.

I am not sure that sand would be that big an issue... with a K&N airfilter, that should not be a problem... I would hope that sand does not get into the engine at all!!!! If it does, 10 miles is too far... :U

Heat could be a bigger factor!!!

Never made it to the Gulf myself, but served with alot of guys that did. To hear them talk, the sand is real fine over there and it will get into ANYTHING.

But like I said above, I could just be paranoid (they really are out to get me you know)

Well, just to confirm - the sand is real fine. Actually, the stuff that really penetrates everything is the dust. As I know *nothing* about car engines, I'll figure out where the air filter is and have a look inside ;-).

BTW - the plural is Bahrainis.
