I have seen this a couple times before, and I'm not very mechanically inclined. It is right behind the driver seat underneath a layer of insulation under the storage box.
That is your ABS Modulator Valve (pump) and the ABS Control Module (computer). If your ABS works, that is where that spinning sound comes form when you start the car and reach 4MPH.

On my `87, it only makes a little noise when I put it in reverse for the first time in the morning. No noise at all, the rest of the day.

Interesting. Shop manual says it should do it every time the car is shut off and 4 MPH is reached again, as it's a "check" the ABS system runs on itself each time. My 86 does.

yep the noise you hear is the valve cycling. All the senors are checked and the valve cycled.

Interesting. I always thought that noise was coming from my rearend. I'm talking about the rearend on the car of course.
Its the space control unit. When you want to jump into light speed just open up the valves tothe fully open position and you are ready to go. OK its the ABS control unit.
