I have a 1990 c4 conv with ride control and its in need of new shocks, my ?? is do need ride control shocks, or can I just use a good set of
shocks, and if I use std shocks how do I disconnect the system?? Thanks for your help.
You can remove your shocks and sent them to Bilstein to be rebuilt; the cost is about $100.00 for each shock. You can buy new ones for $170.00 (Eshocks) each, or you can remove the shocks and actuators and sell them, and just put regular shocks on the car for $120.00 (KYB's) that Summit sells.
The actuators just unplug, but you will have to disable the light you will get on the dash.
Sent me a PM if you want the web address for Bistein or Eshocks

If you want to keep the car original..then have them rebuilt. I just had my 93 FX3 rebuilt and its amazing how the car handles now. Some have just put on regular shocks. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.
Go to Search and look up all the posts on the FX3 in the archives. There has been a lot of discussion on this Selective Ride Control, Shocks and Actuators in past weeks. Also you might want to get a copy of the June issue Corvette Enthusiast magazine http://www.corvetteenthusiast.com/ which maybe still in bookstores in some places. There is a very good article on the FX3 system in that issue.
Don't waste the money to repair them. if you like a nice cadillac ride, get Monroe's (i got those and hate them, not stiff enough for me). If you like a super stiff ride, go with Bilstiens.
if you replace them and have a shop do it. MAKE SURE THEY GIVE YOU BACK THE ACTUATORS FOR THE FX3 AND HAND THEM TO YOU!
I went to look for mine one day after someone on the forums here wanted them and noticed that all 4 were gone. Of course I didn't evne think to check if they were still there 3-4 years ago when i had them replaced Those things are worth a couple hundred each
I'd go with rebuilding them. But if you dont, dont buy the KYB shocks. I've had them on 2 cars and a truck. They suck big time. I upgraded to Monroe shocks and struts on my other car and it was a big improvement.
