Default Oil Coolers

What kind of oil cooler are you guys using and what decrease in temps did you see after the install.

I have ran my Modified 84 on a couple of state to state runs and on a 70 degree day I have a coolant temp of 178 to 184 and an Oil Temp of 243 to 248. This is just normal cruising at 75 to 80 mph.

I would like to see the oil temp down in the 210 to 220 area.

I've never seen over 235 with the stock oil cooler, that's with 220-230 coolant temps and running it hard.

An air cooled one would definitely do better though.

Check Summit Racing... they have a few available, I checked them out in the past.

The trick is the right housing adaptor, which is what stopped me then...

but for an old-school SBC? Jeez...

Rich, from posts I remember seeing here, the oil cooler should provide between 10-20 degrees lower oil temps.

Additionally, you might want to consider synthetic oil for extra protection.

The stock cooler on my 87 gives me the temps you describe(200-220). No doubt that an aftermarket air type cooler would be a better option. Because I have mine already, I kept it.
I removed my cooler when I freshend my engine and temps climbed 20-30 degrees without it (approx 250 on a hot day). I plan to reinstall it soon.
