I was on a long highway trip when a bit of vibration began to annoy me. I was in 6th gear doing about 85 on a slight downgrade and I put in the clutch and put the car in neutral for a few seconds. The vibration got stronger and louder and was clearly related to wheel speed. OK, the vibration isn't that bad, but bad enough to notice and add to road noise. Oh yeah, I also hear a bit of a clunk from the rear when engaging the clutch.
Is this driveshaft? Universal-joint? What's a half-shaft joint?
Can someone give me the low down on the post-transmission drivetrain?
If it is the u-joints, what causes the premature wear? Hard acceleration? Abuse or normal wear and tear?
Driveshaft ujoints, half shafts are most likely causes of what you describe. But heck, over the internet with just this info it could even be a wheel out of balance. Jack it up and start looking, poking, twisting for movement that should not be there.
