hi i have a 85 coupe .i have about 2-3in'' of play in steering wheel .next car has been alined an goes straight, drives well on concert but on asphalt tends to follow road .are these to problem related to each other .or is it power stearing pump or rack or somthing else.dont want to replace all .
Asphalt roads can get "grooves" in them from heavy truck traffic or years of use especially if the road bed was not properly prepared. The tires will get into one groove or the other and when you turn the wheel the car will sort of dart to the other groove. It may make the steering feel loose but if you don't see this on new pavement or on a good smooth concrete surface, you should be OK.
The rack and pinion unit should not wear to the point where the steering wheel has that much play. How many miles are on the car? Having a remanufactured rack installed can run to $500-700 depending on the cost of the rack and labor hours.
Worn tie rod ends also may cause a looseness in the steering but a competent alignment technician would have pointed out any problems with any of the steering components when an alignment was done.

I agree with c4cruiser, but not all techs are competent.
Have the tie rods and ball joints inspected by someone you trust.
2-3" sounds like a lot to be just a steering rack issue.
