My '85s exhaust system is all original except for the Magnaflow Catback, which conisists of the rear Y pipe and mufflers. I want to install Hooker 2151 headers, but understand that they are meant for true dual exhaust systems. So does this mean i'll have to ditch everything but the mufflers and just buy some piping to reach the mufflers?
It means you'll be ditching the stock manifolds and stock Y pipe and precats. Every thing before the cat. Thats all. You'll need to buy an X pipe or Y pipe to bridge the gap between the header collectors and cat.
Well, actually if you are going to true duels the x pipe is the way. Which will involve having two cats to stay legal. The Y pipe is used if you want to use your existing single cat.
I just did my 85, I came off the collectors and made my own pipes for each side out of prebent tubing I got at Advanced Auto. Once I got the two pipes into the tunnel area I installed two high flow bullet cats, then an x pipe. Then I cut the original catalytic converter flange off the rear y pipe and used straight tubing to connect each pipe together. The result is a great sounding TRUE dual exhaust. With the exception of the two cats and the x pipe, the total cost of my exhaust was about $30.00. I already had the cats and x pipe when a local exhaust shop quoted me $400. to do the job.
