Ok folks.. I'm back from my brief hiatus.. I've successfully made it to Arizona from Florida.. I only wish I could say the same for the car.. It over heats if i even think about turning the AC on.. and when its 110 outside.. its impossible to be in a black on black car with a glass roof without AC.. My water pump failed right before I left florida so I loaded it on the trailer and forgot about it till I got here... NOw that I;ve been here I replace the water pump, all the hoses, the theromostat..AGHHHH before I left florida I removed the radiator and cleaned all the garbage between the condesor and the Rad (i.e. dead animals, sand, cigarette butts etc.etc..) Also, I've replaced both cooling fans and check there operation.. all is normal... In a desperate attempt to fix the problem I went to a radiator shop here in Phoenix and they as well as three other shops i;ve been to all recommend rodding out the radiator.. As its been explained to me neglected systems get silt buildup in the bottom of the radiator which makes portions of the radiator usless causing the engine to over heat.. it only overheats while at idle and not whiole moving.. although it runs 235 while in motion.. Anyways, I';m taking the radiotr out of the car tonight and taking it to the shop to have it gone threw.. the tanks removed and the core hot bathed and reamed out.. hopefully this will work.. i'll keep ya all posted... wish me luck..
235 in motion sounds awful hot to me. My 89 used to get up to 235 idling around with the a/c on but since I pilled the radiator and cleaned the debris from in between the rad and condenser it seldom hits 200 when moving...you definately have a problem somewhere...good luck.
I hope you replaced the waterpump with a Stewart high flow pump. They cost
$70 and supply double the flow that the factory pump does. They claim up to 20 degrees cooler engine temps. Go look at their site at http://www.stewartcomponents.com and learn a bunch about water pumps. 235 while underway sounds too high to me. Clean the block with fast flush and when you put new antifreeze in, use the mixture for protection only at the lowest temp you expect to experience. This is also covered at the stewart site.
I try some extra steps to help keep temp. under 220degrees in 85degree + stop and go. I have manual fan switches which I tun on as soon as I get to 190. I set A/C to 77degrees not as cool as I would like but it helps. Sure is a hassel to keep engine cool tho.
Welcome To Arizona
You do have some kind of heating problem, my 89 blk/blk/camel roadster doesn't get anywhere as hot here as yours, outside temp 110 my cooling system runs189 while moveing, fans set at 210 to come on and off at 190, as Bill said put in the 160 stat, you want the cooling system to start as soon as possible here, WINTERS are wounderful here, will run at 160 down the road and you can feel the horsepower come alive, its a trade off here, hot summers and great very mild winters
Wow.. what a difference!! the car runs at 195.. in 110 heat!!! with the A/c on 60... I LOVE IT!!!! that radiator shop rocks!!! they did all kind of cool things to the radiator to restore it to its original capacity... I'm in heaven.. my car is running 35 degrees cooler!!!!!!
Glad your woes are gone. What's the name of the radiator shop?
Try a Chili beer, made in Arizona!
