Texas,(southlake/grapevine area) **** Twice the wage and nice houses for well under 200k.
This place pays crap for wages and is too expensive. Stale economy, time to go.
From: Stafford, Virginia Kittah, Kittah, Kittah...
I nearly failed with both of my cars in the last 2 years... The Vette runs perfectly but for some reason the thing barely made the HC test at 15 MPH, at 25 MPH the levels were almost non-existant though...
My Caddy nearly failed this year too for HC... I don't get it, that car runs perfectly as well...
Ah well, outta there also before the next smog is due...

until this state ditches it's tax and spend politicians (and that's BOTH parties here), California will be stuck in it's own muck.
An hour or two in the heat and humidity and Ron will be back - and that's saying nothing about the wages being commensurately lower with the overall cost of living (I'm pretty sure that's on a professional and a trade level, what's left out here of the Union workforce is still stronger than anywhere else). Having lived on both Coasts, I'll take the milder temps and the lack of mosquitos - the fruit and nuts are just part of the job. And Ron, if you haven't, try No.CA next time for a different experience.
RE $600 to pass smog - what's wrong with it? - is it missing major components? If so, no one can help and Big Brother (including the Feds which in any State can fine you up 25 grand for taking them off) won't excuse you. Otherwise, post your test results for some brilliant insights on how to fix it.

If the car is kept in good working order, passing smog should not be a fight.
As far as having a street car, if the price is keeping the engine closer to stock, so be it. I can deal with better drivability and fuel economy if it means I don't have to **** with things every 2 years.
The biggest mistake most people make on the day of the smog test is to drive straight there. The car usually hasn't gotten to operating temperature and just sitting in line ideling isn't going to cut it either. Rule of thumb I use is to drive 30 minutes or more BEFORE I go to get the emissions test done.

Agreed.
If you are a little unsure, drive the snot out of it, but add a couple of bottle of drygas to help clean up the fuel a little. Oxygenates never hurt anything!
To me, the biggest mistake is not knowing what shape it's in before you go - A simple scan will show you if fuel delivery is right on and whether or not it's going closed loop, and if those things are right, it should pass unless the converter is shot (or missing).
I've yet to go for a test wherein the Tech didn't make sure it was at operating temp - Standards are based on operating temp, a/c off. If the smog ***** bug you, drive with the a/c on. That operation is exempt from the regs (CA and Federally) and you can dump all the HC's you want, legally, without a care - which is pretty much what the OEM's have been doing because the a/c wouldn't work with the lean mix and operating temps required to meet the test standards. Maybe you can take some comfort by knowing that on most days, all the Beemers and SUV's are running around out there polluting.
I do resent paying 50 Bucks or more for the test. At least a new car gets you a 3 yr exemption.
In CA you can review the smog history of any vehicle before you buy it at the Bureau of Automotive Repairs web. Anything tagged as a Gross Polluter can be a headache and may have the car on an annual inspection schedule. It's also the seller's responsibility to smog it before you buy it - Code is specific about it, no exceptions, so there's no reason to buy a Driver that won't pass.
