I got that recall on my vette last year. Took it to the dealer, they said it was fine so it didnt get replaced. Sometimes my seatbelt locks up just like the recall says. Took the car back and told them. They said they tested it and it was fine so they wont replace it. I even asked them if I could replace it myself and they said no. Doesnt make sense to me.

Agreed. Head back to the service department (or that of a different dealer), and have a ticket written up that states that the belt has jammed on you as described in the recall bulletin. If they refuse to perform the recall, point out the potential liability issue to them.

If you still can't get any satisfaction at this or another dealer, contact the regional service representative for Chevrolet, and explain your situation to him/her.

I spoke with the service manager at the time and he said no. I never thought about going straight to Chevrolet about the matter. They have to replace it because it was recalled for a reason.

Get it on record in writing on a service ticket that you have had the belt jam on you. Then point out their potential liability if you are unable to use the seat belt because it jams in the future. Their lawyers would be very unhappy to hear that they were placing themselves at risk of such a liability claim.

Involve the regional rep if you don't get any satisfaction.

In addition to the above, I would talk with the General Mgr and if necessary the owner and let them know you will be contacting the NHTSA and advising them of the dealer's refusal to repair. The recall is a "Safety" issue mandated by the NHTSA and is effective for the life of the car, until the repair has been done. It is unfortunate but, sometimes you just gotta keep banging on them.

By the way, I bought this car 11/05 from my brother who had it from new and never had the recall done. I took the car to my local dealer, Scott Chevrolet, here in Allentown PA and they were very helpful and easy to deal with on this matter.

If, after getting it in writing, that you've had a problem and the service manager refuses to install the new equipment, it means that, (and this is IMPORTANT) the dealership has ACCEPTED THE RISK. Then you simply walk into the showroom and ask to see the general manager/owner. Point out to him what the Svc Mgr has just done on behalf of the company and then shut up. In salesman's parlance, "he who speaks next, loses." Most likely, upper management/ownership is NOT willing to accept the risk and will direct that the new retractors be installed in your car.

If that doesn't work, by all means, get on the phone and start shopping Chevy stores until you find one that will work with you.

Good luck.

A solution I frequently use, and has proven very easy and effective, is to sit down and write a memo or letter stating that you have a situation _ _ _, have requested _ _ _ be done to rectify the situation, but were told it did not need to be done and/or was not necessary. Date it, sign it. Take it to the manager of the business and tell them you would like a signture from them. Have a witness also sign. One of two things usually happens, they are scared to death to sign a legal document (which it is) and they will rush to take care of the problem, or they will sign because it is in fact not a problem. If they balk in the slightest, politely ask them for the name and phone number of their district manager. Keep it professional, matter of fact at all times, just like you were being advised by an attorney (which I am not, but I do teach classes in law, and there are many issues you can handle yourself if you know how the law works!). The burden is on the manufacturer to prove they solved the problem that created the recall, not you as the owner.
