Default overheating and heater not working

I just bought a 95 c4 and love it. i originally bought it for my daughter in Texas but found i liked it so much i drove it back to cal. when i got it the heater worked and everything seemed to work. then the heater gave out and all i got was cool air. the control center was blinking and i removed the fuses as instructed but no good . i bought another control center but same results. i now watch the heat guage and it goes to about 220 plus but slowly drops to 205 when moving. i changed the thermostat but same result. i take it that the car should run at 180 deg as the therm is 180 how can i tell if its the radiator or what. i have heard of horror stories about DEXCOOL but i don't think it came with the dex cool. i partially drained it when replacing therm and it looked ok. anyway i am not too impressed with the dealer as they have screwed me in the past with another chevy. they tend to replace until the problem goes away which can be expensive and still have problem can anyone Help.

I can help you with half of your problem. The 220 temperature is perfectly normal for a C4. They run up to 228 before the fans come on.

You can buy a manual fan switch for less than $20.00 and turn the fans on whenever you like. You could also reprogram the computer for more power and change the fan settings while you're at it.

What didja get the daughter?
JD's right about the temps.

95-96 has problems with the "heator control center".
Congrats on the car.

Sounds like you have electronic ac. Pull the codes. Press up/down fan buttons until --- appears, then use the fan AUTO button to cycle through the codes. Write them down report back.

Did you bleed the coolant system after replacing the thermostat?

Uh Oh, first time that I've heard of that. What are the known problems they have?

Congrads on your purchase of a 95 (GREAT YEAR !!!)

Yep the car is designed to run at those higher temps. Mine stays about 205. If you are concerned you can leave the AC on. The 2nd fan comes on automatically when the AC is on and will cool the engine temps right down. I know that leaving the AC on when in stop and go traffic goes against everything that you were probably told about the effect of AC on coolent temps but on your (our) car it really works that way.

My 95 is a 50mile per day DD and in the morning it's an hour of stop & go traffic. Leaving the AC on causes no problems at all (in my experience).

I beleive that if the car is running hot and the heater is only blowing cool air,you may have a lack of coolant.Check for leaks and possibly a loose or defective radiator cap.

Your 300 hp engine will run hotter. You might try a flush of the cooling system.

My Mercedes wouldn't blow hot air a bad water pump ate most of the coolant. Didn't notice it till it got hot and eat the head gasket.

The repair was:
Water pump $700.00
Head gasket $1000.00
Engine wiring harness $900.00.

The 94-95 E 320's are a piggy bank avoid them.

Great! Take two aspirin, get plenty of rest, then drive the car and enjoy the heck out of it.

What'd you get your daughter, a Cavalier?

Man, I'd be ticked if I were her: from a Corvette to a Cavalier...then again, if I didn't pay for it...........free IS good!

i have tried the codes thing but i don't get the ----- as u described. i have tried every which way -- what i did get was it went to -oo and then went from 1-34 sequentially every time i pushed the button. that can't be the codes
I have borrowed a "obd 11" auto scanner but all i get with that is error code

the thing is it works for the air condit the motor comes on water flows thru the heater (although i know it could still be plugged up) but no heat and the light blinks when i put it on auto or any of the settings.

I would disconect the battery for a few minutes and see what happens it will clear the codes Also when you hold the two buttons and oo comes up press the auto button and the fault code should come up. Let us no what the code is Tbone

Well that's what the flashing LEDs mean you have a DTC set for the HVAC controller.

Try again, ignition On (not running) press the < and > arrow buttons at the same time until --- is displayed, then press the center AUTO button to display codes. They only go up to 09.

If you are worried about the high temp, then change your coolant and and replace your thermstat with a 160 degree. Mine usually maxes out at about 210 degrees in heavy traffic, other than that mine hardly ever reaches 200.

Your car is opertaing correctly, his isn't, but its not the 160 degree thermostat. It has no impact on the operating temps of your car.
