I am no expert but IMHO if you cut the exhaust under the car where you are talking about and do nothing to route it away from the car ... you are setting yourself up for death by asphyxiation.

To accomplish what you want (what I think that you want) just go to a muffler shop and have them cut off your mufflers. After you drive it for a month and your head is banging.... go back and have them weld the mufflers back on .

Removing the exhaust from the rear of the main cat is NOT a good idea! Not only will you risk CO poisioning, the RCMP may frown on the noise level.

Removing the mufflers and replacing them with straight pipe is a common way to get a nice sounding exhaust for little money. A good muffler shop should be able to remove the mufflers (they are clamped in at the end of the Y-pipe on the L98 cars) and bend up plain pipe to fit in their place. Cost should not exceed $75 if the shop is a reputable one.

If you don't like the sound, it's an easy matter to re-install the factory mufflers. There are some replacement mufflers that will give a nice rumble at very little cost and not cause you to become a stockholder in Tylenol. Check out the Walker Super Turbos or Flowmaster 50 Series.
