Default Dash Speakers

My 85 came from the factory with the Bose stereo system. A pervious owner replaced the entire system with a JVC head unit, Kenwood rear 6x9 speakers and Pioneer 5 1/4 speakers in the doors. It was all a real amatuer job which I intend to rectify in the very near future now that my Sony Xplode head unit is available from my old Ford for installation. I have new door panels that have not been cut out yet for speakers. Since the Bose system is gone, I figured it might be a neater job to install speakers into the dash and save myself the cutting of the panels. I figured it probably would provide better sound because I hardly hear the ones in the door as they sit down so low in the car. I think they are 4x6 in size. Has anyone installed or re-installed speakers in their dash? Is there enough clearance for aftermarket speakers or am I stuck buying the stock repro units?

My 87 had the dash speakers, and i tried to do Infinium 4x6 plates, but the cleareance was not there, there's a brace running on the drivers side right below the speaker location, and while the stock (low profile cheap) ones fit, these didn't..... so went with door, had to do the same with the new panels, but all worked out...

If you don't want to go with door - you might want to put them down by the foot well like in the later C4. Just a suggestion.

My other thought was to install a 6 1/2 inch subwoofer in the same location as the Bose speaker and a separate tweeter above it.

Does anyone have an idea as to the size of the dash speakers? I am deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other one. Door speakers are a waste for me.

I put a set of polk 4x6 from Circuit City in. When you pull the dash apart (at least on my 85) you get a big surprise! The speaker insert has to be cut out without messing up the outer speaker scrim. It can be done with a dremil and pulling out on the scrim.

Thanks. Didn't see that when I had mine apart.

I am not sure if there is a difference between 84 and 89. I took out my old bose speakers and made an aluminum plate that I mounted the speakers to. I then mounted the plate to the door with a piece of wood behind it. I made the aluminum plates the same size as the bose speaker grills and the piece of wood behind it just a bit larger.

Think I might cover the plate with some similar carpet.

I put a set of 4-6 in the dash of my 84 years ago.Its not too difficult but you do need to find a speaker that has no more than 2 1/4 depth total with speaker and grill mounted. The secret here is that the dash slides into place, you cant slide the dash into place with a speaker hanging down so you just drop the speaker into the dash opening and thats it.It fits snug enough that it wont move.If you look you might be able to find the speaker grills that function.Ive got an NOS set if somewhere if somebody wants the part numbers, and I can find them.

Are there any tricks, or things to look out for when pulling out the dash? I've never done it, but it looks like it'd be pretty easy to ruin if done wrong.

thanks!

5pinball one very important thing to remember when removing the upper dash in early c4's. Due to aging of the material the dash is made of, it becomes very fragile & is prong to being cracked or broken. Be of mine there are some hidden screws under the front of the dash pad. "DOUBLE CK" ALL IS REMOVED. Also in the the defroster Vent there are (2) long screws there. Doing removal lift @ front of pad w/both hands & work slowly towards u paying attention to the front corners where there is metal clips or tabs that are inserted into a slot, Also these tabs are not straight. These hold the Dash Pad in place up front. U must lift up front of dash & work side to side while pulling dash pad back towards u. Hope this helps, work carefully, BEST, GE.
