Took my 84 to the local shop to have it checked to see
why it's fouling two of my spark plugs with oil!! they said
that it needs a complete valve job. what do you guy's
thinks?? also the cost $1800.00 dollars. is these a good price
or did they see me coming a mile away?
Not a good deal !! Do it yourself and upgrade all at the same time. We can get you through pulling the heads. You pull the heads and then take them to a machine shop and save big $
for that money, you can by new built aluminum performance heads and a new xfire intake (or, at the very least, get your intake extrude honed and open that sucker up), and get the TBs bored.

That's a bit much. Have you ever played with an older sb? I mean doing this yourself would not be like doing a tune up but you can do your top end over....just need the books and someone to walk you thru it. Ya gotta just have the time & a place to work & not be in a rush & if you are any kind of a shade tree guy you can do all of the dis-assembly & re-assembly. The only thing you need is a machine shop you trust to do the rebuild on your heads.....or you could get some trick stuff to swap on to your motor & save your heads.
Look, not to be uppity, but it's just a small block 350 like every other 350 that came before it...it just has electronic engine management so there are more things to move...make notes as you go so you can have an outline that you understand...not just what's in the service manual because those were written for service techs, not as teaching tools for us backyard guys. I did that for my LT5 when I needed to r&r my injectors....with the Helm for my 90 + guys in the Registry & here, I did it & it even runs & I'm not a mechanic!

There's no doubt they saw you coming but I think you've got more issues than a valve job can cure. You're oiling heavy on two cylinders tells me that the rings are probably shot too. You don't mention your mileage but I can tell you this, putting fresh heads on a tired engine will only aggravate the oil fouling problem that much more. I'd find another shop and ask them to do a leakdown test and tell them you want to know if the pressure is leaking into the block or out the valve covers. If it's out the valve covers then it's valves but if it's coming from say the dipstick tube, (and I'll bet it is) then it's rebuild time.
I believe you are up around Chicago, I am in Streator but if I can be of any assistance let me know.
I'm with the rest of the group, if the top end is shot, other major parts aren't far behind, like water pumps, piston rings, etc. For $1800 I could pull the entire engine and do a total rebuild, including replacing some factory parts with performance items. They are going to do a lot of labor to pull those heads, and if you are going down that far you might as well do the job right and have a new engine.

One, considering they are probably adding in the labor to remove and re-install the heads, $1800 isn't unthinkable for a valve job.
Two, bad valves will not increase oil burning! Bad valve stem seals could do this, but replacing seals would not involve removing the heads and should probably cost no more than about $300 in parts and labor.
Bottom line: they are incompetent or they are both incompetent and dishonest. Find another shop and/get another opinon.
I've rebuilt engines and upgraded many components for about that same price including having the heads redone, cam installed, and engine dialed in at a machine shop. I'm sure you can find a better price if you look around. It does require a few days worth of work on your part to pull the engine and disassemble everything, then reinstall. If you don't have the know-how, tools, and space, look for a shop that will charge less. Shouldn't be hard to find.
1,800 bucks for a valve job. Isn't the base 350 GM crate engine like 1,500?
You could probably find a good pair of aftermarket heads just collecting dust in somebody's garage in the C4 parts for sale/wanted section for around 500. Then you can take your old heads to that mechanic shop and put them through their shop window.
