I caught a rock from a dump truck :mad and now have a growing crack on the passenger's side. Do you think that these moble auto-glass people can swap it out for me? Is there anything I should know first?
Chris , I had the same thing happen to me awhile back. It SUCKS! It will cost anywhere from $500-$800 to be done right. Make sure they replace the weatherstrip around the windshield, this is a $200 piece. Make sure they use LOF or PPG glass. These are OEM glass not aftermarket junk. Maybe someone here can recomend a good shop in your area. The mobile service was not able to do it at my house because it needed special tools, so I had to sit at the shop for 4 or 5 hours and watch because I don't like to leave my car alone. Bad things happen. Hopefully your Ins. will cover it. All I had to pay was $100 ded. Good luck. Guy
I'm getting one put in my 85 tomorrow and I plan on supervising. I went ahead and got the weatherstripping from Corvette rubber for $145. I'll let ya know how it goes!
safelite did mine in my driveway. once they remembered to show up and then remembered to come back a week later with the weatherstrip we were in business. no problem with the actual job they did, installer knew what he was doing.
I own an auto glass shop, here are the keys to getting it done right. First make sure the tech is NGA (national glass association) certified. Then make sure the one doing your car has done at least one Corvette before. We do everything mobile, and there are very few things that can't be done mobile unless it is snowing out. I would sugest that everone has a 100 dollar or less comp deductible on their car. It dosn't cost much more and when you need it, it is a blessing. Make sure the job is right when they are done. Look you car over carefully. Glass installers use very sharp tools. If they are not used correctly can scrach the crap out of you car or cut plastic. Use your insurance's recomandation or pay a little extra, it will go a long way. :seeya
I just got mine done a few hours ago. Safelite done it and the guy seemed to know what he was doing. I supervised and even helped out a little bit. I made sure to have the weatherstripping before hand since i didn't have my insurance company involved. My total cost was about $350. $200 for the new windsheild installed and $150 for the weatherstrip. He even left me a tube of glue/sealer to repair my clear targa top. Oh and in the process he used a primer/rust inhibitor around the windshield frame. I haven't driven the car or anything yet, but it all seems good so far.
I just had my windshield, windshield weather stripping, and the weather stripping on the car along the door replaced.
- Now the car leaks worse than ever. How is this possible when they replaced the stripping?
- My windshield wipers don't "hide" under the hood like they used to.
I took the car back and it's just the same old same old. There's nothing they can do. I am so sick and tired of taking my Vette in for a service and I find new things wrong with it when I get it back.
All I can say, is if you can watch them do the work - do so!!
Thanks for the tips. I am going to try to take it to a local Vett only shop and have them do a few other things too. Maybe it can all be done same day. I want them to replace the ZF fluid, coolant, plugs and plug wires too. My ded is $500 so I might eat this one to save on future rates. I'm not sure what games GEICO plays since I never have filed a claim with them before. I know Allstate was a PITA about servicing a claim.
Driving on the freeway today and I saw the rock coming at me. Nothing I could do. :cry The crack is about 7inches long. AAA is sending someone over this friday. They might be able to fix the crack without replacing the windshield. That will be free. If they have to replace it I have the $100 decuctible. I feel your pain Chris. :nopity
