PKE is nice but the other day when I was washing the car with the key in my pocket it kept locking and unlocking itself everytime I walked in and out of range. It was comical.
Disable passive mode, with the driver door open press and hold the door button on the fob (transmitter) until the locks cycle takes about two seconds. To re-enable just repeat the process.
Also know that if the key is in the ignition it will not arm itself. Even if you lock the door and shut it, the moment it closes the doors unlock.
Through my experience I have to disagree with your second statement. My doors locked and stayed locked until I bumped the car and the PKE remote moved. Then the doors opened.
Remove the PKE from key ring and take it out of range, put the key in the ignition, roll down the window if you want, lock the door and shut it. The moment it engages the door ajar switch the doors unlock.
If your doesn't then you have a problem somewhere.
I wish there were a way to convert this PKE to a normal key fob where it locks and unlocks when you push the button, not on it's own. This is too automatic.

Same thing happened to mine at a Bowling Green car wash. I finally placed the keys on a post outside the bay. A guy with a C5 in the next bay told me that he "wondered what was going on".
Time to read the owner's manual.:o
When I bought my car, it didn't come with the PKE module - I spent a fortune buying one ($139.00) - more expensive than a C5 AKE (active keyless entry - cause you do have to press the button). Anyway I went to program my PKE by pressing the buttons on the console in the sequence as prescribed by GM and nothing happend. Wouldn't accept reprogramming Does anybody know how hard it is to get at the PKE module burried in the dash?
All you have to do is remove the entire dash. It is just behind the Driver Information Panel. I bought 1 from the Chevy dealer but mine was OK, so I still have it. I had it advertised for $200.00 without any bites. Who ever had my car before me cut into the wiring to add in an after market alarm and cut the wires for the power door locks.

You need to be specific about the steps and information your seeing in order to properly diagnose the system.
Is PKE in passive or non-passive mode? When you put the key in the ignition and turn it to ON, does the telltale lamp Passive Keyless Entry illuminate for a second on the driver's info console? Yes it is in passive mode, no it is in non passive mode.
Ensure the ajar switches are good, that includes the hatch if it is a coupe.
Exactly what were the steps you performed? Could be a minor operator error.

I dunno, it's awfully nice just to walk up the Vette with your hands full to appreciate it as your keys are still in your pocket but the system recognizes your transmitter unlocks the doors and turns on the interior lamps. This way you only need a finger to open the door and then touch the hatch button. Makes for a great grocery getter.
Likewise, nice to get out shut the door and walk away hearing it lock and arm UTD.

I agree its kinda nice for it to open for the grocery getter, but you must admit when it arms itself, if it were a gun, from the sound it makes it would be a pop gun.

i did that with mine when i was getting exhaust put on it. i finially left it on a post outside a ways. i knew it was going to happen so i did that first thing and didn't look too stupid.

When I bought my 93 the PKE didn't work either, so I looked around for a new one but with what the dealer wanted for one ($230) and E-bay $70-150 I decied hell I can just unlock the door with the key. Then for the hell of it I took it apart cleaned up the ball in side (there is a tech tip on it) and put in a new battery and now it works like a champ.
