I put a 4+3 in my 57 chevy truck.
its been in there 10 years.
i put a drain plug on the overdrive pan.
its no longer a mess to change fluid.
u can get one on Amazon, about $6.50.
anyway, i have a Hurst competition plus shifter, and it’s always shifted smooth as butter.
remember to engage the overdrive with the clutch pedal depressed.
as far as it jumping out of gear, it may not be fully in gear, and just pops out.
take the linkage arm off 1st and second.and move the lever with your hand.
it should have the same throw each way, and the same effort.
flip it to second gear. The link arm on the trans cover will be forward.
can you put the linkage arm back on the sidecover?
if not, adjust your linkage.
