I had a 96 A4. The transmission is computer controlled and the shift points and shift firmness can be altered by changing the program. You can either pick up a cheap used Hypertech programmer or take it to a local tuner. If you go the Hypertech route, make sure you get the correct model for your car as they are car specific. Also make sure that the previous owner has returned the stock tune to their car or the programmer will be of no use to you.

The HPP+ has a couple of different programs, 1 for no shift kit installed and another for an aftermarket hardware kit installed...
