just got a 96 polo green coupe with 49k miles.......when do you guys usually need to replace shocks and for that matter is there a better choice than the original equipment ones?

I'm betting that you have the tools to perform this task in your toolbox right now...if that's the question you are asking.
As far as which shocks (and this subject is tackled here about every six weeks), the stock units are Bilstein and are a very good shock. Buy new ones, do not get the stock pieces rebuilt,which Bilstein will do if you ask/pay them.
There are cheaper shocks to be had, which some claim are good, and there are more expensive shocks also. The more costly units are adjustable, if you want that feature.
I'm sure others will echo this opinion; changing shocks is one of the easiest maintenance jobs you will find on the C4.
