Ok I just purchased an automatic 92 greenwood vette with an LT1 engine and the console around the gearshift is always getting hot after I drive it for a while. Does anyone know why?
catalytic converter. mine gets really hot as well. perhaps for several reasons. the exhaust (which the cat is a part of) runs under this part of the car, which creates a "tunnel" for the air off of the exhaust and engine and tranny to escape. since the tunnel sits higher than the seats the heat rises up and out of the tunnel, which, unfortunately is where the console is placed. there is a protection, which was mentioned to you in the response, the heat shield, which is probably missing or torn. if replaced this will deflect the heat and it will be more easily forced out of the back of the car, like originally planned i assume. the heat shield may also provide some noise reduction.
I had thsi same problem with my RX7. The shifter was hot enought to burn your fingers if you touched the screws that held the plastic/leather piece to the acutaul metal stem that went to the Tranny.
When I took out the Stock exhaust and replaced the cat with a Magnaflow Dual Presilincer(yes illegal) The heat in the cockpit was drastically reduced.
The Cat has to get hot....Glowing hot on the inside to burn...or convert the unburned COs and HCOs so that the car will be running cleaner. You can take a non smoggable car and drive it for a while...on a hot day.....and then straight to the smog station and you'll find it may pass.
Just an FYI so your mind is thinking out the reasons for the heat build-up

Not to steal this thread, but, can the cats be taken off and just straight pipes put in place with an 86 vette? Would this screw up any of the computerized information?

Here is a pic of the cat under an 86. The best solution is to pull the carpet and install Dynamat insulation under new carpet. Don't remove the cat and replace it with a "test" pipe as it is illegal and will really pizz Bogus off.

I know why this is happening with mine. It's because I still haven't gotten around to installing the new rubber shifter boot that I bought six months ago to replace the one that is, for all intents and purposes, absent.
I'd suggest you check yours. I'd lay odds it's torn or loose.

I think extremely warm tunnels/consoles are the norm in Corvettes (ALL Corvettes). I know my '96 gets pretty hot after several hours on the highway....especially in AC-weather.
Also, pull a CD out of the player after an hour and I can hardly hold onto it, it's so hot.
