Hello,
When I first researched getting a c4 about 10 yrs or so ago, I was told by many people to stay away from the 84 model. Hard to mod ,can't go fast. Trouble period. After having come back to the forum after some 3yrs away, I have noticed a lot of changes to the way c4 owners now get performance and beauty out of their cars. What I am interested in is, how are the 84 cars looked at now from the ownership, performance mod and any other aspect.
Thanks in advance.
The people that I know of personally that own the 84 seem to love them just like the rest of us love our cars.
When I ask about the crossfire injection they say it works fine.
The cars handle great and are plenty fast for them.
My car may go 160 mph but I seldom get it over 130mph on my own personal race track.
Firstly I'd recommend you get the following books:
"Cor-'vette Specs" by Mike Antonick, ISBN 0-933534-51-5 and
"Corvette From the Inside" by Dave McLellan, ISBN 0-8376-0859-7.
and read both cover-to-cover a couple of times. You'll then have enough info to answer your own question.
I own an original, fully documented Z-51 '84.
Never had any of the problems that are 'supposedly" associated with this year model and I've owned it since '96.
It does handle like a slot car on rails.
It also just won first in class at the Lone Sta Corvette Classic at TMS. There were over 500 vettes at this show.
As an owner of two of them, I love it. I was first very hesitant on buying my first because of all the "rumors" I've heard. But have realized that the CFI is very dependable and reliable. I don't feel that there are that many limitations on mods either, HOWEVER overall cost of what you have to put into it compared to the newer C4's is much higher and by the time your done you could have just bought a newer one. The biggest draw back is that it doesn't "breathe" as much as it could. Once you get past this the car will run with a lot of other ones. Since I'm not a full blown mechanic I enjoy working on mine its very simple.
and I have a lot of fun with it.
Thats great to hear about 84s from owners. The fact that the enjoyment factor is high with perks of ownership. I didn't post during the vette/camry debate because I thought that the issue was baseless. Does any one believe that on Ferrari and Porsche vintage forums anyone would even bother to debate whether to own a great looking, great handling world class sports car with heritage or a Camry? I think not. I am happy about the 84s and the rest of our Corvette clan.
I don't care what any sedan or truck can do. I drive a Vette.

i have an '84. i had it for about 1 1/2 years now. i love it. the only mech. problem i have had was a bad relay for the fuel pump. fast fix and i still love it.
I just sold my 84 296,000mi. and it still looks, drives and runs great I could not keep both so I kept the 96. I did like the stiffer springs in the 84. No body role at all
Thanks for noticing the air cleaner. I was lucky when I re-did the 84.I knew a re-tired GM employee who could fabricate anything help me. When we were almost done with the motor we started looking at the air cleaner. We could'nt find anything I liked in the catalogs. So I came up with this one and he made it for me. The people you meet in this hobby are as interesting as the cars. Like the air cleaner he is a unique.
I've had my '84 for three days now..........What do I know?? Nothing
But I like it, and it is plenty fast enough. My old RX7 was almost fast enough for me. This car....well you can feel the rear wheels trying to break loose under 3/4 exceleration straight and less out of corners.
I am not sure if I am spoiled with the RX7s superior handling but I think the rear end "Bucks" over bumps, and it is scary in a high speed corner. I am not looking to Mod anything else but the suspenison.

Those are crager rims right? What exact crager rims are they 16", 17", what width? and do they stick out or are they pretty close to the stock width? Do they rub at all? how much do they cost? where did you get them?
The wheels are American Racing Torque Thrust ll's, 17x9 with the stock off set. The tires are 275's front and back. I have no clearence issues at all. I bought them at a local tire and wheel store about 5 years ago shortly after I bought the car from the original owner. I paid about 200.00 a piece for them. The car had a nice set of 16 inch wheels on it, that were put on by the original owner when the car was new. But they had just gotten old and I could not polish them up. So I updated to the 17 inch TTll's and it was huge improvment. This is the first Corvette I have had that I decided to do my way. I think I have had more fun with this one. My daughter and I auto-x it once or twice a year, I show it and have won several nice awards, and have a whole lot of fun driving it on the street. I surprise alot of people. It is not for the faint of heart. Its loud and it ROCKS.
