Default Service engine soon

Hi Folks...
'91 L98 116K miles
We are in the middle of a cross country trip (moveing to Missouri for the military) and about 200mi into our run, the "service engine soon" light came on.
Later that night, it went off. Then the next day it came on in the morning, and we stopped for lunch, and it was off for the rest of the day.
Day 3 it was on all day...until about 6 in the evening, then it stayed off. It has been off all day today.

We have stopped at 3 different Chevy dealers-none of them could get me into their service bay in a 24 hour time frame- and all have told me the same thing:
"As long as it isn't flashing, you're fine"

I must say that I am getting INCREDIBLE milage (we stop every 250mi and the most fuel I've put in was 8.1 gallons) and the car seems to be running quite strong.

I would like to believe the dealers, but I've never heard of a flashing service engine light, and I also don't want to screw up my car. We've only got about 750 miles to go..any opinions welcomed.
Thanks!

SOF Vette

and yes I did do a search...thanks fellas...

Any repair facility that has scan tools should be able to at least read the code. You should at least be able to get some piece of mind regarding what the problem is. O2 sensors often act like what you are describing. They often begin to fail and go intermittent. Oil fouling is a common cause, especially on a high mileage vehicle. The car does not go closed loop with a code set, and runs on open loop backup tables. Generally the are a calibration that is safe enough to protect your car from open driving.

You'll need to check the codes to see what the issue is. Shut the engine off, jump A and G (see below) with a paper clip then turn the key to the Run position (do not start the car) and read the codes off of the digital dash. I'm betting on code 32 - EGR.

Thanks fellas.
You would be surprised how diffiuclt it is in rural Montana and South Dakota finding anyone able to pull codes
I was going to do the pin thing-but wasn't sure what I would do if it needed REAL service

I did change the oil before I left-I too am hoping for something as simple as an O2 sensor.

Folks, thanks again for taking the time to give me your insight...I do appreciate it.
