KYB Gas-A-Just is a great replacement shock for the money. They will feel a bit stiffer than the base shocks but will still give a nice smooth ride.
For mufflers, there is a wide range to choose from. How loud do you want the car??

I put Gabriels on my `87 that I got from Autozone for $20ea, & in my opinion, they are much more comfortable than the Bilstiens that came with the car.
