I have two PKE remotes for my '96 that I am "trying" to replace the batteries. The remotes are made by Lextron Products and have only one grey button for locking/unlocking.
The original batteries in both remotes are CR2450, which I've been able to find just about anywhere that carries watch/jewelry batteries.
The problem I've having is that CR2450 batteries that I've found today do NOT fit into the device. When comparing them against the orignal batteries in my remotes, it's very obvious that the battery specs on this are not the same. I've tried different brand names (Sanyo, Energizer, etc.) and they all don't fit. I've also taken it to the local GM dealer to have them look at it and we tried their stocked replacement battery for the device and they also came to the same conclusion as I did - the CR2450 batteries today are not the same as that of my original battery. It's slightly different enough to prevent it from locking into place.
Upon further research, I have found that other people claim that the CR2430 is the correct replacement battery, which is not according to the dealer and what I've found in both of my remotes. I've tried the CR2430 just for the heck of it and foun that it's too small.
My PKE has 2 buttons for the 95. I replaced the battery a few weeks ago and at least in mine, the battery I bought at the local Drub Store/Camera Dept fit. It was tight but it worked.
The PKE remote for a coupe has two buttons and the PKE remote for a vert has one button. I have a vert and my PKE remote quit working, so I took the battery out and went to Radio Shack and found a battery with the same number (sorry don't remember the number). It installed correctly but the PKE still doesn't work and I lost the remote. Maybe this will help if any.
I had the same issue with a "Back-up" PKE...I broke the one I normally use...back-up had dead battery...got the "right" battery (CR2450) but it is about 1/64th or more too thick to snap in place and the old one had a little ridge along the top that is missing in the new one...same brand...
I ended up swapping the tops so I still have one that has a broken top ring but a dead battery....I may try the CR3450 just to have a back up..
BTW I have a 'vert and both remotes have 2 buttons...assume they were replaced by PO.
I've replaced two for the remotes on my 93 with batteries from Radio Shack as well..no problemo's...I don't know the number...I just take the old one in, have it tested, and they match and replace...
