Default Cluster ground wire

Hello,
I read that a common cause of cluster display problems came be traced to an inadequate ground. I also read that the best place to locate it is on the firewall passenger side. I have had some problems locating this. Can anyone help.

Thanks in advance<

Most of the problums I found with grounding on the dash cluster, have been the pins that connect the circet boards together inside the cluster. Not a hard fix. After cleaning the contact points when I put the cluster back together I wedge a small piece of solder into the ground connecter. This makes a tighter conection and has worked on my 84, my unkel's 85 and87.

but you shouild check the grounds also. One on drivers door pillar (hinge location)peel the carpet back a little and you'll see it. The other ground is located on the drivers side on the back of the cyclinder head, from that location a braided metal ground strap runs down to the frame rail in front of the battery...make sure their clean and tight....but you'll probably end up back at the cluster cleanning connections as mentioned.

I had the same problem with mine. I tried the ground procedure that has been discussed with no results. So I figured if its a ground it wants then a ground I will give it. I pulled one of the lamps out of the display, determined which prong on the socket was hot(positive) by placing a probe on a known ground and the other to the socket. Once I determined the hot pin in the socket I simply got a piece of solid thermostat wire, pushed it into the hot side of the socket(there is a small space to do this) and attached the other end the the wire to a known ground. I was able to hide the wire behind the cluster trim. Total time about fifteen minutes. It has been good for two years now. Probably pulling the cluster apart was the real fix, but I had a tough time with the massive plug so I went easy.
