My '91 has had little air flow thru the vents, I opened up the cover on the firewall to make sure it was clean.....it was clean as a whistle.
All of the vent mechanisms seem to work fine, defrost, heater, air vents, etc.
I'm getting 14.3 volts at the plug for the blower motor. Which per the manual seems fine. I ran the self diagnostics on the AC head unit and it displayed no faults, all the parameters seemed correct.
Question is.....do blower motors get weak sometimes, or just plain tired. I mean I do get some air out of the vents, but they don't blow like my my '94 narrow body did , or like my 00 Escalade.
Anybody think this is a candidate for a new AC Blower Motor ?
Let us know if you find what I did... if you havent seen the thread check it out.... it isnt hard to get the blower motor off and stick your fingers up there and feel if its clogged,, OR get an extendable mirror and look in there... Im thinking you have the same problem !!! I hope not !! Good Luck !!

With blower motor off, you can see the bottom of the evaporator, It looked clean as a whistle, almost like brand new ( my '91 only has 28k on it ), I stuck my digital camera in the evap housing and took some shots, they were crummy shots but good enouph to let me know my evap is very clean.............
Maybe the '91 ZR-1's just had poor circulation, I'm gonna change out the blower motor anyway.
Glad you found it to be clean !!! it is a lot of work to get in there..
hopefully it's just the motor. With only 28k on it I would hardly think it would be clogged... it's even hard to imagine the motor being defective
H*LL that car isn't even broken in yet !!!! Im soooo jelous !!!
If it isnt the motor tho' you might check the operation of the vacuum operated "diverter doors" for proper sequencing . Just a thought..
WOW !!! 28 k !!! NICE !!!
Are all the blower speeds working correctly? Is there a noticeable difference between low and high speeds? Sounds more like a blower motor resistor problem.
If something gets wound around the blower motor shaft (like hair, carpet strands, etc.), that can slow the motor down a little. I replaced a b. motor in my truck not too long ago. A pencil getting lodged in the squirrel cage was death of it.
Put in a new blower motor today from GM, airflow increased a little, but the ZR-1 guys are saying the '90 and '91 ZR-1 ac blowers just suck. The dampners are working correctly. Its better than before, but nothing like some of the newer rides I have been in.
I was riding in a friends 4 year old explorer today, it was like a wind tunnel in there with the AC fan turned on high.
Maybe I'll buy a ford blower and fab it to fit the early ZR-1's and make a fortune, at least off the guys that live around hot and humid Texas and Florida anyway where we have to have some good AC.
Sigh - started this little piece of maintenance last night - ugly, PITA kind of work - many tight spaces / angles to deal with....only got about half way into the project before the mosquitoes ran me inside for the night. More fun tonight....can't wait.

Hang in there............I was lucky, everything was clean, wish I could give you some pointers, all I can say is be patient, stop and have a beer or a good stiff drink evertime you make a milestone, my milestones might be as small as "Damn, finally got that one son of a bitch bolt out, now time for some more liquor"
GM - as most of the OEM's - placed a foam filter over the inlet side of the Evaporator. When the Evaporator leaks, compressor oil makes a mess of it and plugs it up as that filter simply falls apart. You won't see it unless you split the case as the inlet isn't visible with the module or resistor pod removed. I'd do a couple of other things first : 1. Try heat or economy only, nothing goes through the evaporator at those settings - if it isn't any stronger, consider a new squirrel cage. 2. Verify that it isn't stuck on Bi-Level. Default a/c is about 95% vents/5% defrost and floor - make sure there's a difference between those settings - a/c and bi/level. 3. Jumper it directly to the battery - if stronger, check for discolored wiring particularly at the connector, which could mean the voltage is available, but it's having a hard time getting from the terminals to the motor. 3. Take it to an a/c shop and ask them to spend 30 seconds sticking an electronic leak detector in the vents - if it's leaking you don't want to take the case apart a second time and you'll save yourself the trouble of trying to clean it up.
