Default 4+3 Tranny

I have the 4+3 transmission in my 88 vette. My question is when you start the car and shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and 3rd to 4th should overdrive automatically be on?

Once the ecm sees the right temp it will shift automaticaly in 2cond, third and fourth, unless someone has dissabled it or a switch or sensor is not working.I usually hit the shifter button to shut the auto feature off and some guys disable it right at the ecm!

When do you hit the button to turn the auto feature off? When you start the car and you are in first gear or when you are shifting from 1st to second. I am thinking that something may be messed up on my vette.

I push the button after each start,Then I can control it manualy with the button on top of the stick.(be gentle with that tab because they are not available and it looks like hell with just the rod showing )Mostly I just drive it like a 4 speed unless I am on the freeway, then I use the overdrive.

Right after you start up your car, you cannot engage the OD until the coolant temp hits 124*. At that point, it will shift in OD automatically. If you floor it, it will kick down out of OD and once you get back into 4th gear, it will drop automatically back into OD. You can also take it out of OD manually with the button. If you do this, it won't go back into OD til you hit the button again.

Does this work the same on a 1985 Vette?

The 4+3 operates differently depending on the year. Look here: http://www.5speeds.com/43table.htm for the differences.
