Default Factory "SECURITY" system question...

I'm a converted Mustang guy/6 day old C4 owner without an owner's manual just yet, so I have what may be a dumb question...

I have a SECURITY light that blinks when you get into the car.
If I press lock on the LOCK/UNLOCK (door lock) button before inserting the key, it (SECURITY light) stays lit until I either start the car, or "unlock" the door with the button.

Today at work, my co-worker (also an 85 Vette owner) said my horn was blowing and that the factory alarm had been set off somehow. By the time I got outside, it had stopped...

How exactly do you "officially" arm/disarm the factory SECURITY system??

I do have a brand new owner's manual on the way, but don't want to wake the neighbor's up if I can help it....lol

Thanks for any help.

On my 1989 you just turn the door key in the lock to disarm. If you throw the locks with the switch when you get out and close the door you arm it.

If it is set off it shuts down in I think 3 minutes to save the battery.

could it have been set off by someone playing with the door handles?

I'm thinking one of my other co-workers pulled on the handle to look at the interior...is that possible?

Actually, there seems to be an issue with my rear glass/hatch. It appears that the plunger that keeps the interior lights turned off has some issues I need to resolve...lol...

BTW, I don't think the door handles make any difference...at least mine didn't.

Thanks for your help. It is appreciated.

When you lock the door with the electric locks, the security system is armed. It can then be disarmed by unlocking the door WITH THE KEY. Try locking the doors with the elec locks with the window down, then reach in the car and unlock the door manually. When you open the door, the horn should go off. That's how it works on my 1990 Vert.

Thanks for the quick replies and tips guys.

Turns out my hatch light switch wasn't quite right and a slight movement was allowing the interior light to come on, which set off the alarm...It looks like something may be missing, but I got it working for properly now.

Also, when set off the system will shut down the fuel pump and starter, I think. It takes anywhere from 12-14 minutes before you can try to start the car again. The wrong resistor in the key will also trip the shutdown mode but I don't think the horn blows.

I forgot to tell you, to turn the alarm off after it has been triggered, put the door key into the door lock andturn to Unlock.

I think after setting off the alarm, you can turn it off with the key and it will start without waiting. The wait time if your VATS key is not read correctly is 4 minutes.
