My 87 corvette with automatic transmission is vibrating and trying to kill when you move the shifter to first. The transmission shifts fine in drive or overdrive, the vibration is only when the car is placed in first with the brake on. Is this a common problem? Does the transmission need to be rebuilt?

Putting the shifter in 1st gear applies the overrun clutches. I have yet to see these frictions wear out, much less contribute to a vibration. If it also does it in reverse, it could point towads the low/ rev clutch pack. The vibration, and the fact that it wants to kill the engine may point toward lock up converter problem, but that too is odd that it only happens in 1st. Go under the car and unplug the white, 4 prong plug from the drivers side of the trans. If the problem goes away, it is lockup relate. Do not leave it unplugged though. Just unplug long enough to test.

I unplugged the switch, it did not rectify the problem. We put it on a scanner, which showed no codes. The scanner showed the correct gear when the shifter was moved, so the switch is working fine. I did notice it was not as bad sometimes. Brought it to a repair shop, really has them dumbfounded. The car shifts fine in drive and overdrive, no vibration at all.
