I flushed the radiator in my daughter's Honda this weekend. The manual specifies using "Honda Coolant". It's apparently especially formulated for aluminum engines and radiators and is supposed to be better on water pump seals. Since I'm planning to do my 95 in a couple of weeks I was wondering if using the Honda coolant might be beneficial. I have a lot of respect for Honda engineering so am wondering if this is a good thing or just dealer "hype".
Anyone using "Honda coolant" or know anything about it?
You dont need to use any special kind of coolant. I use a type of coolant made by Prestone that is made for all engines, especially those with aluminum parts. I bought it at Autozone.
Oh and besides, Hondas are built so tough I bet you could run it with any kind of coolant

Caterpillar does this too, offering a longer warranty on waterpumps, etc. if you use their over-priced, pre-mixed extended life coolant. Personally, I've not seen anything in all of the years to get me to change from good old ethylene-glycol with properly maintained SCAs.

FYI, Prestone's "All Makes" coolant is an organic acid technology coolant. This is the same type of coolant as Dex-Cool. While it may work just fine, my two cents would be to use what the car came with. If it came with a silicated coolant, I'd stick with that. Why fix what isn't broken, and invite potential problems.
It appears that the big difference is that there are no silicate additives in either the Cat. or Honda coolants.
Someone mentioned in a past post on this forum something that really made sense which was that we tend to worry far more about our oil and oil change interval while basically completely ignoring our cooling systems.
Cost wise buying a premium coolant is no big thing (unless you have a "leaker") when you compare it to the gallons of Mobil 1 used in the same time interval. I'm about to do a cooling system flush and I guess I'm just wondering if there is something newer/ better for my "baby"...

For me, getting the original stuff is actually much more expensive. Prestone all-model stuff is like $7 a gallon. Even Dex-Cool is only about $12 a gallon. It costs me $19 a gallon to get old-school GM silicated coolant. Nobody seems to sell silicated coolant anymore, so the GM dealer is about the only place I can find it.
I think they are on that one. I've not heard of people having too much trouble with the Odyssey. Had a cousin who took it to a gas station for an oil change. They proceeded to either a) forget to put in a new washer for the drain plug and overtighten it, or b) put one in, old or new, and overtighten it. Now, it's leaking, and stripped and cracked, too. And HOnda sez they'll only continue warranty if the whole pan is replaced (about $400 +/-?). Oweee.

Don't know about the new Cats, but 3608's and 3406's had cylinder liner problems and they (Cat) said it was a antifreeze problem.
Cats are great class 8 engines but they are not for Cowboys.
Cowboys ride them to hard. The Cowboys are Detroit guys.
Myself I prefer the Cats but all I ever drove was the Big Cam Cummins.
The Cats rev like a gas motor, nothing like a big cat in a Pete or an ant eater.
Your right about anti-freeze being maintained properly. Most neglected systems in a car is the cooling, and the battery.

Problems with the Honda transmissions is a fact. Theres many web-sites with information on Honda trans problems. Honda to avoid a recall has extended the warranty to 100k miles on the transmissions.
Seems like my engine is never together long enough to really test the limits of the "green stuff".....last mod to current tear down was about a year. It always seems to cool fine - even at the heaviest track events. I'm intending on using the same fill on the new engine........
