Default Hey! There it is again!

This weekend I had my '84 out cruising along at 70 when I noticed a strong shimmy (the whole car, but more in the steering wheel) that would come and go as if something was in & out of sync (U-Joints?). I've never noticed it around 60 m.p.h. but the highway speeds it is very noticeable. Being that it cycles every 15 seconds or so, it really has me stumped.

Any thoughts?

Both your front tires are slightly out of balance, or have flat spots. One is also slightly lower in air pressure than the other.
Because of the air pressure delta, the tires are rotating at slightly different speeds.
This means that the balance/flat spots are going into and out of synchronization. Have the tires checked for air pressure, balance, and flat-spotting.

How's that for a thought?

Dang! I'll be checking the tire pressures tonight. Thanks, Larry, for quick response!

Ahhhh.... If only it were that easy. Well I checked the tires. They were fine, so I took the car to have the wheels checked. They too were found to be good. They commented it possibly could be a drive shaft problem, or the transmission, possibly be the torque convertor.

Weird thing was, after I picked up the car I took it out on the highway for a few miles, and the vibration wasn't as bad. I dunno.... More testing is in order.

I'd ensure all lug nuts are tight, and check wheel-bearing play while you're at it. Let us know what you find, please.

had similar prob with my 84 fiero before turned out to be wheel bearings gone bad wouldnt cause a problem until i got 50 60 mph kinda felt like the *** end shaking back and forth if it was the front might make your steering wheel shake i would imagine. could be more then air pressure the belts in the tires could be broken as well i had a truck litterally jump and bounce around like something fierce as ya got over a certain speed the tire pressure was fine but the belts were all busted maybe its slightly diff for a car but i doubt it
