Yesterday I was test driving a 84 Corvette in which the dealship really didn't wanted me too drive, so I told him that I will put my car up since it is fully paid for, so he say okay, but be back in two hours, or your car is mind.
So I started out driving short side street and then I took the car out on the interstate 169 south the car just shut down, with no warning, it had a half of tank of gas, so it wasn't gas, unless the gauge was wrong, so i pull over and the car was a dead in the water it wouldn't even turn over, so I call the dealership and told them that the car had just stop and that I was on the interstate about 11 minutes from the dealership, it took them three hours to find me.
By time we got back to the dealership it was close and my car was lock behind the gates, so the tow truck driver jump the car and it started, so I end up driving it home I call the dealership and he is supposed to be there today to open the gate, so I get my car back today, while it will be Monday, before I can get my car back.
The corvette only has 48000 miles on it, so should I buy it after what I went through.

When I bought mine (from a Chevy dealer) I made it clear that although the car was what I was looking for, right year, right color, etc. that I was also considering several others from private owners. And I also told them what I could buy similar cars for and that I wouldn't give them anywhere near their asking price. I first looked at it on a Saturday afternoon and later, during the week, the salesman insisted that I take it home overnight, knowing that I was a professional tech and would examine the car fully. I did of course and the following Saturday when they finally accepted my offer and I drove it off of the lot, I got it for $12K. Their original asking price? $16K. It pays to go in fully informed, never act anxious or as if it is the only car like it on the planet and let them know up front that you're not BSing them and that you won't tolerate any BS either. Actually my salesman was a pretty good guy. He was a long time Corvette owner and has since retired. Until he did though, I used to stop in regularly and he'd want to know what I'd done to the car lately and we'd just talk Vettes and BS for a while.

**** yeah, do you think they wanted to be stranded for 3 hours with you?
Maybe a dead alternator or an opening in the ignition module from heat. I'm positive they knew the car wasn't 100%. They should not be selling it. If you really want it you can use that instance to negotiate, but I'd be pissed about them locking my car inside after they caused me to be stranded half a day.

I am pissed off about them having my car, but I got their 84 corvette with only 48,000 miles on it, I went out and started it up and it started, but it didn't sound good. I guess that is what I get for wanted one so bad, but the fact is my current car is pay for I owned no one anything on it, so when I go back to pick my car up should I take a lawyer with me and maybe a baseball bat.

Why? Get your keys, give them a piece of your mind, then leave.
If you still have the car, then ****, get out there and do some burnouts! Get the good out of it.
Put some contact paper on the rear quarterpanels first. Then peel it off after burning said rubber.
On the other side of the coin, if they hadn't locked your car behind a gate and it had been stolen, you'd be pissed. No win situation for the dealer. I'm not for the dealer, just proposing another view.
I have three rules about buying cars from dealers:
1. Never buy a car from a dealer.
2. Never buy a car from a dealer.
3. Never buy a car from a dealer.
I'm a salesman at at Hyundai-Subaru dealership... and more than anyone here.. I AGREE with all 3 of the above statements... The owner of the dealership is a customer of my father and I am just there for the experience, as I am still in college. But the Subarus are actually quite impressive (despite nearly getting killed when kids want to test drive an STI -- 0-60 in 4.5). But I would never buy a new car -- even the 95 Vette I have is much newer than I prefer (which is late 50s to mid 70s -- not all of that range is based on Vettes -- Vettes are 63-69, but 70-72 aren't terrible - I have no regrets with the 95 and am actually rather impressed with the 95 still feeling enough like an old car).
I've only been to a dealer once to look at a '97 Trans Am and they wanted way too much for it. The guy would not budge on the price either. Gave him my info, but I never went back. They never called. Oh well I got a vette which is much better
I work in a dealership service department. This never would have happened to one of our customers, I can guarantee that. First off, if there was something mechanically wrong with the car, it'd be back in sercive where our Used Car Tech would be fixing it - not out on the sales lot where this could happen to someone. Second, if a customer broke down on the side of the road with one of our cars either the tow truck driver or the Service Manager himself would be out there with the roll-back IMMEDIATELY. Third, locking up a customers car, knowing the customer is stranded on the side of the road with one of our cars would be cause for someone to get fired.
Your entire story just illustrates that the dealership in question is riddled with incompentance, apathy and an utter lack of respect for the people who pay their bills - you!
Unfortunately, that seems to be the norm at most businesses these days, whether it's a car dealership, a restaurant, retail store or service provider of one form or another. Customer service is rapidly becoming a lost art...

Hey Noob. Fill out your profile to at least let us know what part of the country you are from. That way someone who lives nearby could come and help you out.
Are you in Michigan? Indiana? I-69 goes a long way.
Pass on the car. There are literally too many fish in the sea. Do a search on several of the autos for sale sites. Plug in your price range and search for 84-96 Corvettes and you will be suprised what pops up.
Good luck! http://cars.com/go/index.jsp
