I
The ebay keys, you're stuck with it if the guy cuts the key wrong or messes up somehow(you know we've all seen it happen).quoted.
I wondered if there would be a problem cutting the key, myself. I didn't know if the pellet would get in the way of the key machine vise--it doesn't. I asked the guy at the hardware store if he knew how to cut pellet keys and he knew exactly what they were. It took him all of 20 seconds to make a perfect match. I tried it, had him cut another, tried that and no problem . It's a key just like any other, it just happens to have a resistor in it. 3 keys for $15 or 3 for $90. I'll take a chance on 3 for $15 all day long.

Thanks (for your thanks)...
I just hate seeing people getting ripped off on keys... The cutter Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes is the one that cuts ACCESS #4 keys. The VATS keys fits fine in their machine....

I just called my local chevy dealer, prob one of the largest dealership chains on east coast - Hendrick, and they told me they cant cut my key because they dont have any key information before 1990 and my car in an 1986?
My key has that pellet on it and I do not have the code. They (the employee and manager) told me I will need to go to a locksmith.
Are they just being lazy or can it be that a chevy dealer really can't cut this key?

Read the code yourself.... Bottom pic is when you want to remove the VATS completely. It was added for you to convert your resistance number to a VATS value....

I've said this many times during the years I've been a member/user of the CORVETTE FORUM, but it must be said again. Every time I've posted a request for help the CF members have always responded with more info than I ever expected! This request was no exception!
I REALLY APPRECIATED ALL THE POSTS AND GREAT INFO.
I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE CAN OWN A VETTE AND NOT TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS WONDERFUL SOURCE OF FRIENDLY HELP.
Once again to all responding...THANKS!!! Bill, owner of BEAST 2, '93 ZR1,and the BlackBird a modified '89 L98 daily driver.
The funny thing is, I called another dealership last night that is further away from my house, but closer to my work, and they acted like it was not a problem at all. I told them I have a 86 vette and no code and they told me they can do it and it would be around $30 to cut the key.
Lesson learned- shop around to get correct answers and prices!
