Anybody know of a "plug and play" keyless entry system for the 92 that won't **** off the stock alarm? Ecklers sells a kit for 84-89, but that won't quite work.
I've been jealous of my friend's '93 for a while. If you find one, let me know. I was thinking of even replacing the entire setup with a 93 setup so I could have the keyless entry. I'm tired of looking at a scratched lock on the drivers side!
I have an aftermarket setup on my '92 but it still pisses the stock alarm off if you use the door locks by hand rather than locking it with the fob. You either use the fob exclusively, or manually lock them. When I start mixing them, I end up triggering the alarm. Usually happens at car shows and other events ;).
GM sells a unit for around $100.00 that will work perfectly with the 1992. NO alarm troubles! I did this and it works just like the 93 and up. The keyfob is the same as any other new GM unit and not a cheap second rate button box. I also bought a remote start unit from radio shack that was programed into my GM keyfob. It is a terriffic option on hot days! Search the forum tech archives for part numbers and information and pics as this was discussed in detail about last February or March.
This was money well spent!
I have one that the guy I bought the car from gave me a year ago. He said he never got around to installing it. Right now it is just sitting there. I hate the way the key fob looks so I will never install it, probably end up selling it on ebay and going to some alarm place and get a whole new system(keyless entry/alarm) put in.
My 92 almost burned up in July due to an aftermarket alarm. When I bought it last summer it had a Viper alarm with the remote. It was cool, beep and the door unlocked or the hatch opened. The doors locked when the engine was started. It was my first car remote, it was really neat.
If I left the alarm on however for a couple of days it would run the battery down. I did not know this was the tip of an iceberg! Then one day, very far from home, it would not start! Smoke was coming from under the dash on the drivers side when I finally got it started.
$703 dollars later I have no remote, no Viper alarm. It was wired wrong and had no fuse! When a bundle of wires shorted near the shifter the alarm wires became the fuse!
So I am down on mods. Maybe I would allow the dealer to install that GM item. Maybe.
I just did this too and agree with cerby's post. The GM unit is called a VKE-1000, and with the addition of a $6 relay from Radio Shack, will not cause problems with the VATS. You should be able to pick one up at any GM parts dept for around $100.
